back to article East Coast: Verizon on the hook for landline hikes. West Coast: AT&T denies hooking $100m for 10Mbps broadband

AT&T and Verizon are taking heat on opposite sides of the US over their networks. In California, AT&T is said to be pursuing a deal that would pay the telecom giant $100m to hook virtually the entire state up to "broadband" internet. California Assembly Bill 2130 will allow the state to fund the expansion of broadband networks …

So it's no holds barred free market for customer and small business, but corporate socialism if you're big enough?

Isn't this the sort of monopoly structure that the FCC is fighting against?

Maybe there should be a law that stops the monopoly action by preventing the use of only one operator in an area. That way other operators get a go at the pie and the customers get a better deal.

    Business as usual ...

AT&T is correct; the money isn't going directly to them. It goes to the agency first, and then gets transferred to them. Sleight of hand provides a layer of deniability; Verizon exercises business right to increase fees. This is needed to cover the costs of abandoning copper-wire phone service & nudging users to "enhanced user experience" service.

There's nothing new here that Microsoft hasn't trail-blazed for US. Freedom of choice in a free-market society means freedom to unplug & do without, without paying a penalty.... errr, let my check my EULA.

    E. Coast. . .

In my "town" X, in the "county" of X, [X=X in this exercise] (VERY little research needed) we can not get FIOS from V, (best is DSL over 60+ y.o. over-head copper [even voice gets graded to a 2/3 person "party line" in damp/wet weather] )

Even the "dominate" cable Co. has a "special line-up" for us "poor" folk in this "county" w/out fiber.

Might as well be living in the sticks - it would be quieter than listening to the wigger "thump-mobiles" with my garbage/rubbish can for a muffler..

All, on this "Over Crowded Sand Bar"

You could be anywhere - but I guess you mean Manhattan or Boston proper. Same problems in silicon valley... tech/business meccas have crap internet? yep.

Here in western Massachusetts the state just announced a deal with Comcast to build out their network like AT&T in CA, while holding out on funding for the grassroots broadband projects. Smells fishy.

        Thumb Up

        Re: E. Coast. . .

While in eastern MA, Verizon has discontinued copper in my suburban town, 27 miles west of Boston. I was transitioned to fiber against my wishes. Since I no longer have the copper advantage of service when the power fails, I have transitioned my landline number to OOMA VOIP, thereby saving $25/mo.

I may consider switching my internet to Verizon, though, now that I have fiber, as their service is 20Mb/s faster than Comcast (50 vs 30), for the same $70/mo.

Nice to have a little competition. Out here there's just Comcast ($80 here) and Verizon's shit copper. They put FIOS expansion on hold 5+ years ago. Our town is rolling out some sort of municipal wifi this year so hopefully that'll be something.

      Chester, Pennsylvania?

I'll bet there is more than one town in a county of the same name on the east coast. Not even counting major cities like Philadelphia.

Obvious if you live there, I guess.

    FAIL

    California joins Tennessee

As another legislature purchased by big telecoms? Why am I not surprised?

Truly, the boards of both AT&T and Verizon (and probably the other ones, too -- better safe than sorry) should be taken out and SHOT. Well, okay, maybe just give them life without parole. In the worst prison they can find. But really, either of those options is too good for them.

Of course, nothing like that will never happen. Instead, the big companies will continue to laugh all the way to the bank. They will screw the taxpayers by getting crooked and incompetent legislatures to hand over tax money to them, and will then screw the taxpayers AGAIN by continuing to charge ridiculous prices for crap service. Then the government will have to raise taxes again because they're out of money. It's just the way government works, folks.

A recently found copy of the Encyclopedia Galactica that fell through a time warp has an entry under "Telecomms Companies." They are defined as "A bunch of evil jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came." Viva la revolucion!

What about California COPPER LAND LINES

AT&T Charges a FORTUNE for Copper Land Lines.

$ 29.25 for "Measured service with CID + TAXES

$ 32.00 for "LOCAL (12 Miles) Flat with CID + TAXES

$ 57.00 for LONG Distance, Beyond 12 Miles, + TAXES

ONLY Option for Long Distance includes 12 Features, MOST Customers NEVER USE !!

It should be $ 10.00 (Measured) & $ 20.00 (FLAT) and INCLUDE CID & Long Distance.

$ 2.00 for each extra Feature.

There should NOT be ANY extra Charge for Long Distance.

AT&T - VERIZON, SPRINT, T-MOBILE, etc. CELL PHONES do NOT Charge for Long Distance.

The charge for UN-LISTED Numbers is beyond common sense. CELL Phones do NOT Charge for Un-Listed Numbers.

Best Part: AT&T does NOT Distribute Phone Books anymore
