...comes up with this shit? Microservice? Up until a few weeks ago I had never even heard of it. (not a dev). Looked in to it. What we are talking about are services, or small apps that run like a service. But hey, lets give it a cool name. Maybe I'm turning into old IT guy, but I'm about sick of all the buzz words. Just give me the code or app and let me make it work on a server. Keep the buzz out of it please.
I don't think you've grasped the finer points.
DevOps .. sorry, microservices are a new and improved evolution of containers whereby, instead of sharing a common core and delivering encapsulated bundles of just enough extra to deliver whatever service you wish to containerise into a lightweight solution, you duplicate the kernel along with the extras in the container.
It's ever so clever. - it makes them kernel independent, you see.
I predict that the next stage in the evolution of software as software will be delivering all the extras an app needs so that you don't need to worry about shared libraries - everything you need in one, independent container.
I fully expect that, within the next five years, some genius will work out how to virtualise hardware into software as well.
After that, the sky's the limit - you could even run multiple 'machines' on a single hardware platform !!!
The final stage will, of course, be the separation of the user's I/O device(s) from the services delivered, such that a single hardware machine can 'serve' the virtualised applications to a remote, diskless 'client' machine.
Hell, one day, the 'client' needn't even be static - it could be mobile and fit in your pocket (or at least on your lap anyway).
