back to article Tor Project works on anti-FBI defenses amid iOS row with Apple

In a blog post timed for the start of Apple's now-delayed FBI showdown, Mike Perry, lead developer of Tor Browser, said the project is stepping up efforts to keep its anonymizing network free of government interference. The Feds' attempt to compel Apple to build a deliberately weakened version of iOS with its security …

    There's Gratitude...

...or at least a little irony. Didn't Tor start off as a US Navy project?

      Re: There's Gratitude...

I don't think there's any irony or lack of gratitude here. If Tor is compromised in any way, it becomes as useless to the US Navy as it would be to you and I.

This wide-scale encryption push is long overdue. I've been waiting at least 20 years, ever since I started messing around with PGP, and when "export strength" versions of IE had 40bit encryption.

Somehow I didn't think it would play out like this though, with the collapse of democracy in the US, rouge three-letter agencies, Snowden's whistle blowing. Truth is stranger than fiction.

      re: those agencies (beware pedant)

I think not all the agencies are rouge... some are rouge, white, and blue as well. But many are indeed rogues.

Not to mention just because J Edgar Hoover wasn't adverse to putting on a spot of rouge and some lipstick, doesn't mean the rest of the TLAs follow along with his wardrobing decisions.

"the collapse of democracy in the US"

What democracy? The government at State and Federal levels has been an oligarchy in all but name for nearly a century.

Please let it not be shut down

I fear our government becoming more authoritarian and shutting it down despite having created it. It was good when it worked against our enemies but now I can easily imagine ISPs being required to block this traffic after any convenient terrorist incident.

    Lobby your representatives now.

Shutting it down would require the assistance of the rest of the planet. However, said group are getting increasingly pissed off with the retarded playground bully that is the US Government.

Perhaps the next stage will be TOR over steganography. At least Trump's making plenty of noise to hide the signal in.

"Tor developers would rather walk away from the project than knacker their own software"

If the rumours are to be believed then they may not be given that choice, which is partly why the anti-slavery arguments that Apple is using are important.
