I don't think there's any irony or lack of gratitude here. If Tor is compromised in any way, it becomes as useless to the US Navy as it would be to you and I.

This wide-scale encryption push is long overdue. I've been waiting at least 20 years, ever since I started messing around with PGP, and when "export strength" versions of IE had 40bit encryption.

Somehow I didn't think it would play out like this though, with the collapse of democracy in the US, rouge three-letter agencies, Snowden's whistle blowing. Truth is stranger than fiction.

I fear our government becoming more authoritarian and shutting it down despite having created it. It was good when it worked against our enemies but now I can easily imagine ISPs being required to block this traffic after any convenient terrorist incident.
