back to article VMware adds dedupe tool to VSAN penknife: You don't need no steenkin' array

VMware has updated VSAN, its virtual SAN software, to version 6.2, adding data protection stuff to catch up with Nutanix and Simplivity hyper-converged infrastructure appliances. Someone forgot to mention something...

Wanna turn on that dedupe functionality?

    Please reformat your drives.

    Hardly enterprise worthy.

You are correct that non-disruptive upgrade operations are signs of a mature enterprise platform, and VSAN delivers. The upgrade is non-disruptive, and managed by VSAN (it automatically rotates through the cluster). Virtual machine access is not impacted.

    Deduplication & Compression Functionality

    Disclaimer: VMware Employee.

Deduplication and compression in Virtual SAN 6.2 is enabled per cluster.

The process of enabling/disabling deduplication and compression on a Virtual SAN 6.2 cluster is a rolling upgrade and does not incur virtual machine downtime.

    Thank you.

    Joke!

    VSAN is a Joke!

The numbers they're reporting are a JOKE!

They include VSAN in every vSphere license they sell. Every one. Really.

If you're a large VMware customer, you already have it and you might not even know it.

Shame VMware. You're better than this. Go home, you're drunk.
