back to article Map of Tasmania to be shorn of electrical, data links to outside world

Internet service providers in the Australian state of Tasmanian are bracing for a temporary loss of connectivity, as the owner of the Basslink cable connecting the island state to the mainland scrambles to fix a break in its electricity transmission system. Basslink operates electricity and telecommunications connections …

Does this mean Tassie might actually float away then the anchoring cable is cut?

      Either that...

Or a new surge in 6 fingered, 2 headed babies being born late October or early November as the populace resort to "traditional" entertainment.

Son, gotta talk to ya, sit yourself down, your old man's got somethin' to say

What you orta know 'bout the the birds and the bees and to keep ya from goin' astray

'Cause there are some rules that us menfolk must follow and life on the farm'll be fine

You can bang anything that you find on the farm here, but don't touch your sister, she's mine...

As if a thousand Minecrafters suddenly cried out at once and were silenced...

ISPs are not the only ones bracing themselves. There will be significant angst in the bsquared household if we lose YouTube and connectivity to Minecraft servers. And it's still school holidays! The little perishers will have to go outside and play.....

    Tasmania's world heritage wirelessness

A great time to go outdoors and explore Tassies magnificent outdoors.

    Drop out, disconnect.

This is no time for exploring Tassies magnificent outdoors, Winkeypop, it's all burning up at present - for much the same reasons as lie behind the dams being empty.

PS: though there is another reason for the empty dams: they ran them beyond capacity a couple of years back in order to game the carbon tax system in anticipation of a change of government. Now they are paying the price.

Course they do. This is El Reg, after all. Although I'm surprised they did not draw our attention to lengthy Brazilian HVDC connectors.

Maps of Tasmania are very rare these days. (Unfortunately).

"You guys do know what "map of Tasmania" is Aussie slang for, doncha?"

I'd hazard a guess that it's much the same thing as 'map of Australia" is in Kiwi slang.

    March 19.

"Repairs are expected to take until March 19."

    3 years! That's a long time!

19th of March on the other hand would be a for more reasonable repair date!

      I think they mean 2016-03-19.

      There, ISO8601 has you sorted.

      Re: March 19.

No, in America that would still mean the 19th of this coming March. For March of the year 2019 it must be written in any of the following, proper formats:

      03/'19

      03/2019

      3/2019

      3/'19

      March 2019

      March, 2019

      March '19

      (uncommonly) 03.2019

Either the 20- prefix placeholder must be used or the placeholder's substitute, ', must be present.
