back to article Defeated HP will put Helion cloud out of its misery in January 2016

Both of HP Helion public cloud customers have until January 31, 2016 to find another home for their off-site software and data. The Helion service was put on death row in April, when HP exec Bill Hilf said public cloud "made no sense" for his company. That same month, within days of signing Helion's death warrant, Hilf …

So how does this relate to http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2015/10/19/hp_cloud28_customers/ ?

    1. Preston Munchensonton

Helion is basically just Americas. Cloud28+ is an EU offering.

“We will sunset our HP Helion Public Cloud offering on January 31, 2016.”

Still not being clear then. WTF does "sunset" mean in that context?

      Sunset means

that it will make a reappearance on the next sun rise.

        Re: Sunset means

It was just a typo. He actually said "Sun's net". HP is admitting that all the potential customers laughed at them and chose Oracle, instead. I'm surprised they didn't go to Dell or IBM, or straight to Amazon's cloud without the intermediate step.

Oracle?! HP is hardly attractive for cloud but Oracle are even less so.

Allusion to Helios as personification of Sun in Greek mythology from which name Helion probably originated.

"Still not being clear then. WTF does "sunset" mean in that context?"

It means that if you were relying on them for your data storage needs you're going to lose all your data if you don't find someone else to store it, and go through the hassle of copying it all over to your new provider - which if it is GBs or TBs worth, is going to take some time and cost quite a bit of bandwidth.

Which is one major reason why my company doesn't use cloud services, and never will, no matter how much the snake-oil salesmen push it on us.

    Wah wah waaaaaah!

Launched in May 2014. That went well.

I wonder how this will affect HP's commitment to Open Stack. Their Virtual Private Cloud offering was supposed to move to Open Stack but they still haven't and the most recent upgrades to VPC is still VMware based.

    1. fredesmite

HP only commitment is to sell Intel shit made at FoxConn in China

    2. fredesmite

I personally can't see HP sponsoring a opensource component unless they are selling something with it.

    HP incompentence

HP has outsourced so much work and skills they can't even RE-PACKAGE A LINUX DISTRO and ADD OPENSTACK TO IT to deploy to Intel servers built by FoxConn in China

They use to have a logo " Invent "

    It has been replaced with"

" Out sourced to Lowest Bidder Injun cesspool "

      Re: HP incompentence

      Why repackage a distro?

Surely you just want to curate packages and qa patches into your own repo?

        Re: HP incompentence

Helion was a custom built distro pulled from Debian .. they couldn't do that that right !

@fredesmite They used to have a logo " Invent "

That particular logo having been pushed during Carly's time at the helm. It's a measure of the parlous state US politics is in that she's the credible republican opposition to Trump.
