I've helped set up an ownCloud server for the distro I use, I also run a private owncloud server that connects to the house computers well. It's a cracking bit of software and has lots of options, as long as you use a decent database all is good. That was an interesting interview.
Storage silo unification from file sharer ownCloud
We came across what seemed like just another file sync and sharer, and sighed. Yet checking ownCloud's product out showed there was a lot more to it than that, which made us curious. I've got it set up on my home Debian server and the whole family's phones for photo's and videos and I regularly back it up to an offline raid NAS. I find it great and easy to use and most importantly I know who has our data and thats us not some shill corporation who will use it for whatever they want. I've not had chance to look at the contact/calendar syncing yet but I'm sure it'll be as easy. Great stuff.

Just install something like DavDroid (or any other WebDAV based sync client) and point it at the URL in the OwnCloud Contacts/Calendar "applications".
It really should be that simple. Contacts and Calendar were my primary reasons for setting it up, to move away from Google. File sync is less important to me, but useful for my parents business where it allows them read-only access to delivery notes etc. which they can then get onsite while delivering (their orders often change at the last minute).

Good!
Been running OwnCloud on and off for quite a few years now, before everyone went cloud and privacy bonkers. I've got to say well done to them so far, it's now really polished and they've avoided the temptation to break a great product by felching on loads of features onto the core that can be easily integrated with addons.
Been a year or so since I checked on Android's native CardDAV/CalDAV support... nope still doesn't exist. I'll give those third party CardDAV/CalDAV apps a go one of these days.
