back to article US braces for WW3 with Cyber Command 'Vision' of integrated cyberops

Admiral Michael S. Rogers, commander of the United States' Cyber Command, has released his vision statement for the US's warfighting arm in cyberspace, coincidentally advocating a much larger role for his command and agencies in the national defence apparatus. Rogers, who is also head of the NSA and the Central Security …

Why can't I get past the fact that the cover letter is printed and then scanned - I remember laughing when my old man did that because he didn't know how to print to PDF, but this is a billion dollar cyber-agency..

Oh well, I guess it doesn't get in the way of operationalizing their digital objectives for cyber-empowerment.

Prosperity (We gave it up by letting them go off the Gold Standard to pay for bombing Vietnamese peasants, then perform QE/Monetary Diarreha for the mansions of the few)

Intellectual Property (We pledge allegiance to the flag of Mickey Mouse and crack-sniffing MPAAers)

Personal Information (What is this I don't even)

I guess even George Orwell could not have imagined the cravenness. The title itself fits right into MiniLove sloganeering.

"USCYBERCOM is additionally responsible for protecting the .mil domain, though likely not at the user-facing end of maintaining adequate SSL certification – which seems to have been ignored at the time of writing."

Why would military put their encryption in the hands of a 3rd party? That would give hostiles something else to go at; and revoking the certificate during an attack would cause all sorts of problems. Using an external service that you don't control for your encryption would be fucking stupid, tactically speaking.

Yes, it does make you more susceptible to MITM *IF* the user/program doesn't check. They've probably thought of that though.

This is the organization that *lost* in .... far too many conflicts for me to list here. And still has a habit of paying $450 for a standard 8oz hammer.

If you think they thought of it before, I've a bridge to sell.

    CyberCommand....?

This is totally unrealistic. First off, the guys you would want on this probably wouldn't be allowed in the military nor would they want to be. Second, pay and work rules.... things are better on the outside and a sense of patriotism will only go so far. It won't pay the bills and being restricted to living where the government wants you to (along with other controls) wouldn't make the job attractrive. Anyone who gets a position in that group is probably already thinking of a better life in the civilian world where creativity is rewarded.

So who or what are they using then? Contractors?

    Cyber command ...

Bet you they're running xp and have admin followed by passw0rd as their log in creds for their servers.

America really is laughable to me these days, freedom. Like the pro nsa freedom act?

As a dear departed friend would say "are they paid to act like arrogant cunts or is this a freebie?"

    Split the roles apart

I've always thought that the NSA and CyberCom need to be dissolved and re-built from the ground-up, each holding a different role:

--A defense agency that does purely defense, no offensive or criminal investigative roles, just ensuring that our infrastructure is up to snuff, blocking malware from coming into the country, doing security testing of various products, and producing security software for the people. This group would also run the central infrastructure for the US and the only group with access to the taps on the submarine cables (Specifically for installing malware firewalls, DoS/DDoS mitigation systems, and IDS / IPS type systems)

--An offensive agency that does all the intelligence gathering and attacks against foreign enemies

--A cybercrime investigative agency that would handle the investigation of computer crimes involving American citizens, and work with the varying police agencies and the justice department to ensure that computer crimes are handled properly.

Of course there would also be the requirement for any communication between the agencies to be fully reviewed and given the capability of review. Obviously crimes reported by the defense agency to the Investigation agency would be handles like a standard criminal case, so there would be the proper amount of privacy in there, it would of course be open for judicial review unlike the Intelligence Services Court.

So, back to the ideas of Gordon Welchman then..

If Gordon Welchman hadn't decided to start publishing about his activities in Hut 6 without asking anyone he probably would even be able to take the credit for this, as the idea is an almost verbatim repeat of his approach to wartime information networking which changed the whole US command and control model in use until then.

Shame, but unlike Turing he pretty much caused his own problems. It does show that such geniuses need to be managed - if there had been better recognition there may not have been such a drive to go public (just IMHO).

how about /quote/ This directive pertains to cyber operations, including those that support or enable kinetic, information, or other types of operations.

so that still includes their inherent right as the USA to launch billions-dollars of bombs & billions-dollars of propaganda, plus that sci-fi death-ray at whoever & whenever they wish - fine with me!

remember that many of the USNavy(*) who would otherwise be RIF'd are being re-trained as Cyberwarriors - and they are not all just typing anti-Putin things on The Guardian comments website or even here, not that that is such a bad thing, as at least it keeps them from more directly interfering with the democratic process.

Methinks, SeanS4, you be seriously mistaken in believing the Internet/world wide web/Global Information Grid/Meshed Intelligence Community/Military Industrial Complex is not a more dangerous place to be ignorant and arrogant in than the physical world. It certainly can be, and therefore definitely is, ...... because of the highly destructive and dysfunctional, radically creative nature of human beings operating systems, ....... already well into causing catastrophic economic damage for considerably more than just lots of red faces.

And a staunch disbelief of that shared fact and/or obscure transparent fiction provides all of the necessary stealth for successful virtual application and real program makeover and/or takeover.

The only certain feature of this environment is uncertainty, which makes agility a necessity ... Cyberspace is a human construct, so the broad principles of strategy and conflict still apply. Warfighting skills remain critical — they just have to be faster and partnered.…. Admiral Michael S. Rogers, commander of the United States' Cyber Command, head of the NSA and the Central Security Service

You really think so, Admiral, whenever hearts and minds capture is the fundamental base source requirement for successful vital universal reprogramming of both warring species and dumb animals. Warfighting skills remain critical only in the hearts and minds of warmongers surely.

And warfighting always catastrophically bankrupts and destroys warrior nations, and in all manner of strangely conceived and previously thought impossible and/or improbable ways from both never perceived anonymous outside forces and from deep within.

War fighting is therefore certainly a great zero sum game for any and all fools at play with ICT tools. …. and also for such fools and tools at play and at work in REST situations? …… [REST stands for Representational State Transfer. (It is sometimes spelled "ReST".) It relies on a stateless, client-server, cacheable communications protocol -- and in virtually all cases, the HTTP protocol is used. REST is an architecture style for designing networked applications.]

Change the Master Programming, Admiral. You’re presently fronting for forces with sources on the road to nowhere grand and good, and on the highway to everything centrally bad and mad. And if you don’t have inhouse and homegrown the necessary intelligence and CyberIntelAIgents to phorm the novel programs in radical systems required, simply buy in all that is key and fundamental, vital and viral, with, in the case of Uncle Sam, fistfulls of virtually useless dollars/QEd paper IOU treasury notes. And although that is certainly never going to be cheap whenever IT is always expansive and expensive for Command and Control, it is simply no more difficult that that.

Hell, nowadays it is easy to transfer instant fortunes in any fiat currency hue in a flash to any account with no one out of the loop wiser to the real plays and greater games being played.

Re: Why would they mention Skynet?

"Why would they want capability to take out the UK Military Satellite network in this day and age?"

Because the wars of the future are not between nation states as such, but between ideologies. Currently the US and the UK are best buddies as both are still in their "neo conservative" phase. As far as I know this was started in the US by Reagan and in the UK by Thatcher. Many countries are now seeing the effects, an ever widening gap between the rich and the poor. Currently most governments still follow the "neo conservative" ideology, mostly because the poor have little choice in the elections. There are virtually no left or middle candidates or parties. Also there's a public narrative that our current situation is the fault of the poor/foreigners/etc and not the banks. So many people turn on foreigners and burn refugee homes instead of banks.

But imagine the tides turn, and, like in Greece, a moderate government gets elected in, lets say Germany, or the UK. Unlike Greece there is little you can do against this, except for starting a war.

Novel Secret Intelligence Services Mandate ..... Secure Future AIdDerivative Programs

        Hi, Christian Berger,

Wars of the future, in both the future and present, and as are being waged in the here and now and out there in cyberspace and all media channels, both predominantly mainstream and fundamentally alternative, are between truths and deceptions and the constant search for undeniable facts in preference to contrived fictions.

If your life and existence is built upon a fabric of secret lies and guarded untruths, is reality a manipulated virtual construct in service of the reported spinners. And if they are only intellectually challenged lackeys doing the bidding of controlling others, is the fool no grand master of the great game and super folly.

As cyberspace has grown and become more pervasive, paramilitary art has changed. No one today can exert or maintain national power without acute sensitivity to the digital networks that underpin the world’s communications, prosperity, and security. Although the UK MoD and Intelligence Services had an early advantage in cyber capabilities, today much and increasingly more of the virtual intellectual property with technical expertise necessary here resides outside government and often outside our nation. The United Kingdom and States are working hard to maintain their hedges and edges over potential adversaries and presumed allies in cyberspace—but must surely realise all nations are facing leading peer competitors in this domain and they be racing ahead preparing the future for their arrival and pleasure.

And that be not a top secret to anyone anymore whenever it is so obvious to everyone everywhere effective in commanding control fields of future endeavour.

    Have a nice day, y'all.

And although one can easily buy its cyber weaponry, for such is always currently on sale to interested parties and persons of noted interest too, you can't actually bulk own and possess the mass of it ..... just as in the case of major minor gold bullion trades ....... because it is so dangerously destructive and disruptive a virtual reality trade market when its source secrets are uncovered and discovered an ab fab fabless invention and grand intellectual property experiment for delusion in illusion and allusion.

Cyberspace is a dynamic domain which changes every time someone connects a networked device. The only certain feature of this environment is uncertainty, which makes agility a necessity. Innovation, leadership, and education will continue to be crucial to this agility. Cyberspace is a human construct, so the broad principles of strategy and conflict still apply.
