Why would military put their encryption in the hands of a 3rd party? That would give hostiles something else to go at; and revoking the certificate during an attack would cause all sorts of problems. Using an external service that you don't control for your encryption would be fucking stupid, tactically speaking.
Yes, it does make you more susceptible to MITM *IF* the user/program doesn't check. They've probably thought of that though.
This is totally unrealistic. First off, the guys you would want on this probably wouldn't be allowed in the military nor would they want to be. Second, pay and work rules.... things are better on the outside and a sense of patriotism will only go so far. It won't pay the bills and being restricted to living where the government wants you to (along with other controls) wouldn't make the job attractrive. Anyone who gets a position in that group is probably already thinking of a better life in the civilian world where creativity is rewarded.
So who or what are they using then? Contractors?

I've always thought that the NSA and CyberCom need to be dissolved and re-built from the ground-up, each holding a different role:
--A defense agency that does purely defense, no offensive or criminal investigative roles, just ensuring that our infrastructure is up to snuff, blocking malware from coming into the country, doing security testing of various products, and producing security software for the people. This group would also run the central infrastructure for the US and the only group with access to the taps on the submarine cables (Specifically for installing malware firewalls, DoS/DDoS mitigation systems, and IDS / IPS type systems)
--An offensive agency that does all the intelligence gathering and attacks against foreign enemies
--A cybercrime investigative agency that would handle the investigation of computer crimes involving American citizens, and work with the varying police agencies and the justice department to ensure that computer crimes are handled properly.
Of course there would also be the requirement for any communication between the agencies to be fully reviewed and given the capability of review. Obviously crimes reported by the defense agency to the Investigation agency would be handles like a standard criminal case, so there would be the proper amount of privacy in there, it would of course be open for judicial review unlike the Intelligence Services Court.
If Gordon Welchman hadn't decided to start publishing about his activities in Hut 6 without asking anyone he probably would even be able to take the credit for this, as the idea is an almost verbatim repeat of his approach to wartime information networking which changed the whole US command and control model in use until then.
Shame, but unlike Turing he pretty much caused his own problems. It does show that such geniuses need to be managed - if there had been better recognition there may not have been such a drive to go public (just IMHO).

Because the wars of the future are not between nation states as such, but between ideologies. Currently the US and the UK are best buddies as both are still in their "neo conservative" phase. As far as I know this was started in the US by Reagan and in the UK by Thatcher. Many countries are now seeing the effects, an ever widening gap between the rich and the poor. Currently most governments still follow the "neo conservative" ideology, mostly because the poor have little choice in the elections. There are virtually no left or middle candidates or parties. Also there's a public narrative that our current situation is the fault of the poor/foreigners/etc and not the banks. So many people turn on foreigners and burn refugee homes instead of banks.
But imagine the tides turn, and, like in Greece, a moderate government gets elected in, lets say Germany, or the UK. Unlike Greece there is little you can do against this, except for starting a war.
