Google's new parent Alphabet, unable to buy, has snapped up in a recursive-satire rush. (We'll explain in a second.) The domain-grab has already spawned a spoof (more at the end of this story). Following the announcement that the web ad/search goliath will be folded inside a new company called Alphabet, …

        Probably not.

While the IP points to an MS server (try visiting, the registrant is a registrant protection service (ie. proxy to avoid putting you personal details into the whois database).

The reverse DNS just reflects the resolution of the domain.

Its nameservers are also not MS (primary on Rackspace).

        Registered by... someone

        whois gives

        "Registrant Name: c/o Limited

        Registrant Organization: Registrant of

Registrant Street: Suite 3686, 24b Moorefield Road

        Registrant City: Johnsonville

        Registrant State/Province: Wellington

        Registrant Postal Code: 6037

        Registrant Country: NZ"

which doesn't really look like MS... more like an obfuscation service.

I was the recipient of strange looks every time I asked if it was the first of April, but I knew there were hijinks afoot!

    That's unusually agile for Microsoft?

I'm a bit puzzled by the thing - MS is not usually that quick off the mark.

I suspect what has really happened was that a registrar must have cooked this up and sold it on to a high level friend inside MS.

    How things change...

Back in 2002, In Bill G's keynote speech, the phrase Trustworthy Computing was coined, but MS forgot to buy the domain. We laughed then at what happened when you visited (try it). Its pleasing to see that its gone full circle now and pushes to bing.

So how is google able to do this, by surprise, without a vote needed by the shareholders consenting to the reorganisation?
