back to article PlayStation outage: Sony asks 'have you tried turning it off and on again?'

Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) continues to give users headaches, as many are still unable to access the service with their consoles. Sony blamed a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack for a the protracted outage that plagued its service on Christmas Day, but by Saturday it seemed to indicate that the worst of it was …

    DDoS? Really?

Would a DDoS only affect PS4owners? Mrs Coat was using her PS3 all over the holiday period and there was only one occasion when she couldn't log in. Maybe an hour or two at the most.

I don't own a PSx, but still can't help but think that a lot of recent problems are misdiagnosed by Sony.

Perhaps different server systems for the different versions? All through the Xbox One drama on Christmas day, my kid's new Xbox 360 (our 3rd) had zero issues - even downloaded a 10GB game at the time.

Not enough data, too many conflicting stories.

    Ahhh the old MTU trick..

NTL used to try that one too, it would keep customers going for weeks.

Our ps3 could log in fine, but sometimes when these things happen we are unable to use web stuff as it seems a lot of is it sent through a PSN proxy.

That was (sort of) my thinking - changing a setting that has presumably been the same through numerous resets, reboots etc is 99.99% likely to be either (a) desperation or (b) distraction except for the occasions when (c) someone made a change on the server and didn't think it through and there are no convenient scapegoats.

      PS4 online all week

PSN has been working all week for me. I wonder if these people have malware and are part of the DDOS botnet, and therefore have their IP blocked? (there are plenty of freetards here that keep crying about Cinavia that are likely to have their PC's crammed with malware).

I would bet they are either knowingly, or unknowingly part of the DDOS....

I see they've taken the MS defense to heart.

    First: Reboot.

Second: Try this.. it might work.

Third: Don't call our tech support.

Fourth: There's a screw-up. Send us money for the upgrade package.

My PS3 reported a DNS problem, a restart fixed it.

    ICMP

Having to fiddle with MTU implies they've turned off icmp at their end. Security '90s style.

    Have you tried?

Come 'on I cant be the first who thought of this???
