back to article FCC: You'll have to wait EVEN LONGER for faster wireless broadband

The FCC confirmed today that it will delay its planned wireless broadband spectrum auction until at least 2016. The US regulator blamed a court case for holding up efforts to sell TV frequencies to cell networks, which will then use the airwaves for faster and broader mobile data services. The commission hoped to auction off …

It does make me wonder about the coincidence (if there is such a thing) of all the delays for the auction, the cable mergers, and the net neutrality ruling. Looks to me like it's more than incompetence in making decisions which is the norm for any governmental group.

It couldn't be that if they push this stuff off until after the Presidential Election next year, they won't take blame one way or the other? Maybe be able to land a great income as a lobbyist? Maybe... maybe... maybe....?

Aside from the fact that the Presidential election isn't until Nov. 2016, your point is probably valid. Definitely postponing it until the Nov. 2014 dust is well settled is all to the good as neither faction wants to introduce any more uncertainty than may already exist. (Given that your chance of losing in November is slight, unlike the primaries, any uncertainty is anathema.) Besides, it gives a longer time to extort contributions from all the participants which is fantastic for politicians lining up future donations or employment as a lobbyist should one lose, regulators setting up their next cushy job, and even the firms themselves capturing both in their "loving embrace."

    but, but, but...

I thought 802.22 would allow use of spectrum without infringing on existing TV broadcasts?

    Geez - I am SO corn-fused!

    Follow the money

The longer they can keep "issues" like this in the air then the more money will flow to the politicians campaign - although I wonder if, by the time they finally make a "decision" the mobile market will have changed so much that the spectrum space will be obsolete?
