back to article Apple slings fanbois' data at Chinese servers in China Telecom deal

In an effort to woo buyers in China, Apple has inked a deal to store Chinese customer data in Chinese servers for the first time. Plenty of technology firms are leery about storing sensitive information in China (although given the NSA's reach, US servers aren't exactly private) but Apple has hired China Telecom to use the …

    "Disingenuous"? You're going with that?

"If they're making out that the data is protected and secure that's a little disingenuous because if they want to operate a business here, that'd have to comply with demands from the authorities," said Jeremy Goldkorn

It's more than disingenuous, it's the lie that everyone swallows when they sign up for cloud-based anything anywhere, not just China.

If you're a UK citizen then the authorities have as much legal right to your data if you keep it at home as if you keep it in a UK data centre.

How much did they bribe the authorities this time?

How do you wire so much cash to China Telecom?

I doubt users really care where the data is. This is done to please the Chinese government. And the point is not to keep the data safe from the NSA…

    Apple are not trustworthy

They only want your data to make money off it, and then they're going to keep the money to themselves.

If I steal your car and sell it, and keep all the money, thats exactly what Apple do with your data, only its all quasilegal because you "signed" an 800 page disclaimer that say so.

And that's not even the real slap in the face, the real slap in the face is that these immoral activities will be seen as grounds by the powers that be to reward Apple and present them as an example of one of the best companies in the entire world. Sort of how Savile was a generous philanthropist.

These people all have one thing in common: they get off on seeing how much you will put up with.

What happens when a US Judge orders the data handed over?

Given the US's recent decision that it has free access to data stored anywhere in the world by any US corporation will the Chinese authorities be happy with a US judicial order to disclose the data? Don't think so myself.

Also, how long before 'our' data ends up being stored there for reasons of cost, efficiency, etc..? Eish!

It won't matter what happens. Really. With everyone storing data to the Cloud, and data centers linked, and 5eyes looking over every shoulder... it's there for the taking.

I can see where certain Science Fiction authors are correctly predicting the future... one large data center on each continent linked together. Resistance is futile as they know what we're doing before we know what we're doing.

Wonder if they'll simply hand over the keys to the two additional special services that run on iThangs?

    Yes, encryption, it's perfectly safe....
