back to article Ditch the sync, paddle in the Streem: Upstart offers syncless sharing

Cloudy upstart Streem is reinventing file sync'n'share by getting rid of the sync. Instead of throwing out everything but the kitchen sink, it’s just throwing out the sync - so to speak. On tethered or mobile smart devices, any files you create can be drag and dropped onto a Streem Drive icon which causes them to be streamed …

    Hmm, that protection question..

WHOIS: some protection thing in far away Panama

    Email: via Google

App server: geo location tracks to Ashburn, USA

FAQ re security: only talks about AES256, not where you live contractually or in which jurisdiction.

You know, I'm probably not even going to bother with this one.

“instantly streamed … giving consumers the best possible quality without any lag, no matter the device or bandwidth.”

Cures the common cold too I expect...

Checking their FAQ I see I was right...

      "What is Streem?

Streem is a "magical" cloud-based hard drive that offers unlimited storage space for your files. All files are securely stored in the cloud and streamed to you on-demand, saving you terabytes of space on your devices."

So soon I'll be streeming 4K video over dial-up to my etch a sketch.

That's ridiculous. Etch a sketch doesn't come with a modem.

Wet piece of string instead? I mean, if we're talking low tech..

    Portent?

Is it a portent that the link to the "closed Beta" brings up the following ?

Firefox can't find the server at www.streem.com%e2%80%9d.

    Unlimited space

Either they're lying about that, or it's not long for this world.

    Bitcasa 2.0?

I hope they've learned from the stillborn disaster area that was Bitcasa, a remarkably similar offering from a couple of years back. Maybe that's where the CEO disappeared to suddenly last year. Anyway, I made the mistake of falling for the hype of unlimited online storage with sync and mirror. Absolutely shocking QC. Production version was still late-alpha. Download speeds were about 100kBps (yes, that slow) and files were corrupted and lost somewhere along the line so that you only got about half of what you put up there, back.

Oh yes, and Asia had no access to dedupe, so renaming a folder was shit slow, requiring all the files to be uploaded again.

    Once burnt and all that.
