If they want to go global...

... They really need a less Chinese-sounding name.

People can pronounce "iPhone". They can pronounce "Galaxy".

"Xiaomi" really doesn't roll off the tongue for many of us. That, quite simply, will cost them sales.

Re: If they want to go global...

It is already pronounced as SHAOMI .

So how about chowmi(n) ? Everyone who ever got a chinese takeaway would know the pronounciation !

Apple v/s Chowmi(n)? Cant go wrong then.

WIll also do wonders for the Chinese takeaway business. Hell, they could even become distribution partners worldwide. psst. Wanna chowmi(n) phone with your sweet n sour Apple sauce & pork?

Aye, the world is filled with xenophobes. I say: let 'em pay more for less. Those without the innate bigotry will benefit, as it should be.

      What about Hyundai? Or Häagen-Dazs?

Buy a few ads during the Super Bowl that mentions your name a half dozen times and people will learn how to pronounce it, even if it isn't obvious from the spelling.

Anyway, Galaxy isn't the name of the company that makes that line of phones, nor iPhone for that matter. Nothing stops them from making the "Xiaomi <insert English word here>" for the US market, and people will refer to it as the "xPhone" or "Universe" or whatever.

The only reason that they are moving from China to even poorer countries is that they will be able to pay less wages and not worry about people complaining about an abusive working environment. The only thing that they are concerned with is money.
