Nobody cares ...
... about Joyent - obviously. Why do they even bother making announcements?
Sun refugee camp and cloud operator Joyent has partnered with Canonical to bring tailored Ubuntu images into its technically sophisticated cloud. The deal was announced on Thursday and means that developers who want to run Ubuntu on Joyent's advanced SmartOS-based infrastructure can now do with greater confidence in getting …
> Nobody cares about Microsoft One.
You are comparing a multi-billion dollar profitable corporation which has had hundreds of billions of dollars in sales over the past 10 years (Microsoft) with an outfit which has been in startup mode for the past 10 years, has never produced a profit, has never had an identifiable product to sell, and whose tangible track record consists of pompous PR announcements from their ex-CTO or current VP. That would be Joyent.
Perhaps you need a reality check.
Joyent has much of the Solaris talent that created ZFS, DTrace, etc. Innovative tech that every OS wants, they have ported or copied the tech. If we take DTrace:
Linux: copied it under the name Systemtap (in the logs the Systemtap team removed references to DTrace so noone would believe they looked at DTrace: https://blogs.oracle.com/ahl/entry/dtrace_knockoffs )
Mac OS X: ported it
IBM AIX: copied it under the name Probevue
FreeBSD: ported it
QNX: ported it
VMware: copied it under the name vProbe (in a blog post they explicitly say so)
NetApp: talked about copying it in a blog post, but as NetApp is based on FreeBSD, they have it now.
And probably some other OSes too have ported or copied DTrace.
Maybe the deep engineering expertise counts. They also have node.js - you may have heard of it. And also "Manta" the new approach for big data analysis, described on their blog. It looks like Joyent will be another Sun: extremely good tech will come out of Joyent, that everyone rips off while mocking them.
Compare all this to what Microsoft has done. What cool tech has MS done? Windows? A bloated buggy OS. Xbox 360? Buggy and bloated. MS SQL? It was bought, and it sucks in comparison to other databases. Excel? It was bought, but that is the only MS product I think is good. Everything else just sucks. There is no impressive tech from MS, or can you name one?
