Here is what really happens with low latitude volcnic eruptions:

There is nothing planet destroying, these stupid novels are just the worst form of jounalism writ large. (Imagine Rupert Murdoch personally giving you syphilis.) Then the weather breaks and the volcanoes go away for a decase of so. And the weather goes to play elsewhere -somehwere that has chopped down all its trees.

No harm done in the long run.
