back to article One month on, Edward Snowden cleared to leave Moscow airport

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is free to leave his Tom-Hanks-in-The-Terminal* style life behind after getting a pass to exit the transit zone of Russia's Sheremetyevo Airport. According to local media, including state news website Ria Novosti, Snowden has been given the document that allows him to exit the transit zone of …

    Oportunity knocks

I wonder if he managed to snaffle any of the Russians secrets during his stint in the airport ?

How, exactly? He wasn't an uber-hacker who somehow broke into the NSA's network, he merely used/abused the access he was granted as part of his job contracting for the NSA.

So it wasn't he who hacked into your sense of humour and disabled it, then?

Reports are that he sought the job to gain access to the documents he stole. Puts a whole new spin on things. It is called espionage.

Where does he go to next ?

Presumably Putin is hoping that he will cease to be his problem by disappearing for a couple of weeks before smiling from somewhere in South America.

Re: Where does he go to next ?

Indeed, and the US putting more pressure on them in the mean time will probably play into their hands with the current latin America/russian trade talks. If Europe decide to push fracking then Russia will lose a lot of export gas.

So Russia and their new American 'partners" will invade Europe for the gas?

Well it is one combination that hasn't been tried yet

Careful Putin he may be a horticulturist in the making

  4. Herby

    Maybe the papers allow him...

...to be escorted to the American Embassy to be exported back to the USA.

There could be another three letter agency that is looking into how to do this. Maybe part of the Treadstone project could handle it.

So they improved immigration queues at Terminal 5?

    WTF?

This does not make any sense

Why does Putin care about doing something that would further expose the activities of the NSA? They are about to enter a proxy war with them via Syria. I would think that he would be doing everything he can to damage the reputation of the USA, including granting asylum to someone that can aid their wartime propaganda.

I'm guessing his statements about Snowden are all about his political image and don't actually reflect his personal feelings.

How about Snowden stops leaking information and what Putin didn't say was that Russia will use that info against the US behind closed doors.

Re: This does not make any sense

Nobody really wants to piss off the U.S. too badly. There's simply too much money to be lost and too many roadblocks to be thrown up by other countries by doing so. Unfortunately, the U.S. knows this so they abuse their position. My country really is guilty of being a terrible bully.

Just because you have been spying on each other for nearly 100years, have supported every terrorist and dictator that opposed the other side, and have 20,000 nuclear warheads pointed at each other - doesn't mean you can't be friends

It would be much more beneficial for Russia to have access to that information to itself without it being shared with the rest of the world - hence they want "exclusive access" to the rest of Snowden's data. In fact its probably to their advantage just for the US to think this and to never be totally sure what Russia does and does not know about the NSA's operations.

    Arrest the easier target

If we're going to hunt down notorious criminals, we should start with the one hiding out at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. No trip to Russia is required.

Funny how there is this obsession with one guy at a certain address.

If you want to go arrest those responsible for the current state of the USA, you would do better to go to

      U.S. House of Representatives

      Washington, DC 20515

      (202) 224-3121

round up the scum that voted for all this secret court nonsense and total world surveillance plans and have them shot behind the shed.

Funny, I hear a helicopter - never been this close before. What's that banging at my door ? Hey ! <connection failed>

    Nonsense

Authorties have been camped outside an embasy waiting for a chance to grab Assange, but Snowden is just sitting at an airport. There is no way he is a lagit whistle blower. he has to be a plant, expecially since the media has talked about it non-stop.

      Re: Nonsense

A plant??? Please, consider the harm done to American software and cloud companies *, plus the big backslash for America's PR worldwide. It would deserve a Stupidity Nobel Prize. Not that we can't totally discard that hypothesis, given the way the American government has been acting in the last decades, but it would set a new record.

Note*: A totally deserved harm, in my opinion.

    Joke

I think he should just sneak out of Russia, hop on a channel tunnel freight train like all good illegal immigrants do, jump off in the UK and make his way to North Wales. Once there, clamber up it's highest mountain, find a cave and live out the rest of his life as a hermit.

It would be the ultimate in hiding in plain sight - Snowden up Snowdon!

Snowden didn't get the exit papers. Someone either misheard stuff, or this was an actual trolling by the airport authorities just to ruffle some feathers.

  12. wowfood

Clearly since there aren't any routes by air he can take to get to a safe haven, he's going to go by sea. They probably have one of the russian nuclear subs waiting to escort him out of the country. A few days of russia publishing reports that he's "In negotiations with the russian immigration office" followed by "his asylum requrest was turned down, since then he has gone AWOL"

About a month or two later there'll be reports that he was spotted in some seaside town / island

    Enough Already

I was a straight ticket voting Republican for years. I supported Reagan and both Bushes...at least until the Wall Street shenanigans. I am, however, so sick and tired of the incessant attacks, innuendo and lies directed at _OUR_ president. By all means advocate for your policies and put forward reasoned criticisms of your opponent's. Personal attacks like yours seem designed only to demonize and de-legitimize. Don't you know how it hurts our country's standing and influence in this world when people like you go beyond the bounds of any reasonable political discourse day after day after day? It also serves to polarize the nations politics, to the point of making our country ungovernable and weaker. It is just un-american!

Right. Supporting Bushes, especially both cast doubt on any intellect or validity in your post.

"I am, however, so sick and tired of the incessant attacks, innuendo and lies directed at _OUR_ president."

Good. Please keep _YOUR_ president and _YOUR_ values in _YOUR_ own country and stop meddling and fucking up the rest of the world.

As for rest of your post, guess what the rest of the world is un-american and quite likes to stay that way.

      Re: Enough Already

      UN-AMERICAN??? WTF?

You know who is Un-American; any U.S. President that would support the mass surveillance of our own citizens. The leaders of the government are doing fine demonizing and 'illegitimizing' themselves. Ten million more articles about it won't do those clowns any harm.

I was going to write a big, long post about the complacency of the U.S. populace and the hypocrisy inherent in 'supporting our troops because freedom isn't free' but not doing a damn thing to protect our freedoms beyond occasionally shouting a few platitudes. But I won't. I'll just say: As a flag waving, gun owning, pickup truck driving, business owning American you; sir, can suck the red, white and blue right off my hairy ass. Godless commie.
