World+dog may be busy preparing Dropbox clones, but Oracle seems to think a better idea is to build your own domestic cloud storage rig and has therefore published a recipe for doing so. Not a Dropbox replacement... yet!

The major failing of this "solution" is that there is no mention of synchronisation. Anyone (world+dog) can build a webdav server and allow upload / download of files from an internal or external IP (or DynDNS address) using HTTP over pretty much any device. The flexability that you get with Dropbox (and alternatives) is that you choose which folders / files, in "your cloud", you wish to synchronise to what device(s).

Heck, I had a webDAV server running off a home broadband connection in 2004 (and very useful it was too), but it it certainly didn't do any automagic synchronization.

If you want sync, try http://owncloud.org/ That should count as a dropbox replacement.
