I'm overreacting.

I know it's really not worth saying, but why does it have to be MS VS 8? I know it doesn't matter, but being 2013, couldn't it just be distributed with portability in mind, to the extent it can be portable at least? I really don't know why this irks me, maybe just because of the old Wintel paradigm.

Also, when this code was used, was it really used on Windows?

never heard of this software before today myself but the installation requirements include XP or Vista 32-bit with .NET

if you want a linux-based file system test(w/so perhaps check out iozone

Not sure if there is something better or not.. iozone seems to have quite a bit of options.
