back to article GoDaddy puts gratuitous sexy pics on IT content

Web biz GoDaddy's virtual data centres are apparently best illustrated using a photo of a bootilicious young thing in a thong gazing thoughtfully at a tan-coloured bed spread. Conveying little insight into the operation of a hypervisor-powered on-demand computing warehouse, the baffling picture doesn't appear to be a temporary …

And it has obviously succeeded in its goal of attracting more clicks, especially with the able assistance of co-conspirator Anna Leach. Plenty of clicks for everyone.

    Hmmm...

...I wonder if the photographer (MobiusCo) or the model (Mercedez Lee) were paid by GoDaddy. That image doesn't appear to be available via MobiusCo's online store.

Neither the model nor the photographer were paid by GoDaddy, because GoDaddyGuides is not owned, operated, or hosted by GoDaddy. It's a simple WordPress site being used by a GoDaddy affiliate. I thought it was rather obvious when I did a whois and discovered that it isn't even using GoDaddy's name servers...

    What the internet is about

I was told by a sales rep from a major server manufacturer that their biggest customers were porn sites, so this is just targeted advertising. Although, if that is the case, it's a bit, err, soft!

In my innocent youth I was told how to find out what the internet is really all about: in Google search, images, turn off Safe Search and type in any female name. Of course, I checked several. In the name of science.

      I tried Jane: clothing stores

I tried Sarah: a wikipedia article about a bible character

I tried Jenny: a Flight of the Conchords video

Nothing dodgy even in image search that I could see.

          Brilliant :)

But it looks like he's right. Jane Austen was about the steamiest image I could find on those results. Maybe Jane Austen is as hot as it gets (she did have men "making love" to women for entire coach trips) or maybe the internet is not what it was.

I'm off to try Ophelia. If you see what I mean.

Even if you normally run "Safe Mode Off", you'll probably need to double-check the setting is really off as mine returned to default "Moderate" due to it not picking up my login information (cookie). [And yes, I do allow Google to track everything I do, by design.]

https is supposed to deny the referrer information being sent. This is not to say that google dont use a second channel to make the http connection with referrer information.

              Re: HTTPS

https is a valid protocol and removes the ability of your provider to track you.

And actually google does not uses normal http if the main request is https. As for the shorter link - I did take care to remove any unnecessary bits (like screen/browser resolution for instance, sent in the URL)

    To the Editors.

    Dear Sir's and Madame's,

To fully consider this and all future issues, any scantily clad pictures of women on The Reg should have hi-res links so we can check for any moral issues without squinting or having fuzzy images when you zoom in.

The hard working photogs and models of the UK deserve their works to be displayed in the best possible resolution so their work can be appreciated by all.

I think GoDaddy marketing is still working on their messaging...

    Let me help....

    A) GoDaddy Virtual Data Center will save you so much money you can afford to have a model for a girlfriend?

    B) GoDaddy Virtual Data Center uncomplicates your IT infrastructure, leaving you with more time to pursue the ladies?

    C) GoDaddy Virtual Data Center such a thing of beauty that it gives an underwear model a run for the money? (Sorry, GoDaddy--not buying that one)

    D) GoDaddy Marketing has found out that in the male-dominated IT industry, a scantily clad model in a boudoir setting draws more attention than a Nepalese woman sweeping off the steps?

    E) GoDaddy is going trouser so much money over their virtual data center offering that they will need special help to get the trousers off?

Google Image Search is your friend

...you can upload an image and it will find 'visually similar' images. Actually not so helpful in this case as there is one metric fuck-load of flesh-toned photography on the intertubes (adjective carefully chosen), but what claims to be the original is here:

But it needs an image! Any image! A stock image!

I see this "needs an image! any image!" thinking on other sites too. With usually stock images which have little to do with the story. For example www.nu.nl has a stock image of a CRT (remember those?) with a full-screen (remember?) output of IPv4-only (remember?) of netstat.exe -r applied to lots of stories about computer security.
