The supposed subsidizing of handsets by western carriers is beyond overrated.
If you look at the phone's cost, vs the massive monthly charges, you're basically paying double for your phone hardware a lot of the time.
iPhone = $199 "ohhh so cheeeep!"
24 month $79 "ohhh $1,896 whoahh"
Add the two together: $2,095.00 WHAM! nice subsidy you got there, wait, who got the subsidy?

Mostly, shelling out for an unlocked phone and then getting a competitive phone-less rate comes out way ahead.
But of course sales people won't tell anyone, that would screw up their bonus.

Why $?
Because if you want to buy one, you go through their site in HK which prices things in $ - or someone like DX who price in $ or Euro's. Haven't bought a Lenovo as they are still a bit more expensive than the no-name frankenphones, but it is attractive given that they are a named manufacturer (even if not Samsung or HTC).
