In all seriousness, we've always used boffin and we always will. It's a term of endearment. You have to be seriously clever to be a boffin, though, with some kind of doctorate in a real science.
Otherwise you're just an egghead.

Or suppose that it's just a black hole having trouble with his bowels from having swallowed too much of that ethanol formed in gas clouds and planetary surfaces. Seriously, it even fits with the self-limiting cycles*. I mean: Bilge drinking -> puking all over the place -> the next morning's hangover -> repentance and remorse -> next galactic weekend ... and the cycle restarts.
Where is my Nobel prize?
Self-Limiting cycles: Obviously these are bicycles with their baskets full of bricks. Don't know WTF they are doing in a black hole, though.
