What is this article doing in here??
Nerds planning the ideal vacation destination may soon be forced to strike Egypt off the list. The nation's government plans to impose a ban on internet pornography. The country's Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology has taken preliminary steps to outlaw e-rotica, forming a committee to investigate the …
Who goes on holiday to an Islamic country and surfs the net for porn? Seriously?
It's like the people I saw when I went to Luxor (mainly British men and women) who had absolutely no idea about Islamic dress standards. Guys who thought they could wander around stripped to the waste and women in bikini tops. If you go to someone else's country you play by their rules.
(As for the actual censorship, I tend to disagree with censorship...)
"A man must always be covered in loose and unrevealing clothing from his navel to his knee. This is the absolute minimum covering required." - Source: http://www.almasjid.com/content/islamic_dress_code, and confirmed by a number of muslims I know.
So it seems that there is no rule against being stripped to the waist, as long as the naval is covered.
It's a little more complicated than that, basically men are allowed to be bare down to the naval (which I'd argue is above the waist) but only really if you're doing some sort of work which requires it, ie: working hard in a field, autoshop, etc. In public you're expected to be covered shoulders to knees.
Here gos for the knee jerk reaction.
After they have removed access to smut sites, will they also ask all women to wear head-scarves and/or long robes ? Will they then segregate women and men followed by a strict implementation of sharia law ?
They can then ban tourism and foreign trade and when they have successfully walled of the country just how they will feed the population ?
I think the Egyptians have already had their fair share of "difficulty" in the last few years without having to impose even further draconian measures on an already weakened society.
What is it about religious ardor that always seemed to generate such infuriating results.
This looks more like a new governement trying to gain absolute control of the nets using the trojan horse of moral outrage and family/islamic values. They know they cam to power due to the arab spring and the co-ordination that can be achieved through the net so they want to make sure that it doesn't happen again.
Here's the new boss, same as the old boss.
