Rubbish. I'd be happier with the changes that Google and other giant bully companies are foisting on us if they just admitted that they are doing this for their own benefit and stopped pretending that it is for my benefit.

Just wanted to say: huge thanks for this article. It's reminded me to get my arse into gear and check out the options for replacing the gmail accounts for my wife and i and my google apps account.

I reckon apple's iCloud for personal email (iOS dev, already have several iCloud accounts and apple aren't interested in selling my data) but any recommendations for business email with a domain name? Don't need anything fancy, but 'free' and 'push email' would be nice.

I am a Merkin, so excuse me if I've got it wrong, but when the Queen wants to "friend" you, she puts you on the Honor's List (congrats on the Jubilee, BTW). She doesn't need a Social Network. Google's problem is that it is dawning on Governments that Government Policy does not require identification of individual citizens - in fact, and this is a shocker, surreptitiously obtained and hard used "friends" have very little residual value. Who knew ? Yeah, the Queen, I suppose.
