So motion detection and voice control are this year's useless waste of time gimmicks?
How are you supposed to watch Babestation on a TV with motion-sensing, it'll keep switching channel.
CES 2012 Week Samsung has followed fellow South Korean giant LG to unveil a 55in OLED TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). This one has motion and voice control. Naturally enough with showcase products like this, Samsung didn't discuss pricing, preferring to talk up the telly's panel specs in comparison with current …
But you are still limited to whatever Samsung decide to offer you in terms of an upgrade, and if they don't support whatever feature you want (or they stop offering upgrades after the second or third year when most people own TVs for 10 years) then you're still stuffed.
Dumb panels are always the best bet, assuming you aren't too offended by the presence of an extra box.
Although an open standard for these TV upgrades would be more interesting, so you're not dependent on just the TV manufacturer.
"A loud clatter of gunk music flooded through the Heart of Gold cabin as Zaphod searched the sub-etha radio wave bands for news of himself. The machine was rather difficult to operate. For years radios had been operated by means of pressing buttons and turning dials; then as the technology became more sophisticated the controls were made touch-sensitive--you merely had to brush the panels with your fingers; now all you had to do was wave your hand in the general direction of the components and hope. It saved a lot of muscular expenditure, of course, but meant that you had to sit infuriatingly still if you wanted to keep listening to the same program.
Zaphod waved a hand and the channel switched again."
I love that Doug quote, thanks CADmonkey!
I like the watery background image on the TV, I'll have to get something like that for my desktop.
As for app-tastic, not in the UK at least for now. Over a year ago (2010) Samsung started competitions encouraging developers to create apps for their TV platform
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/01/26/samsung_tv/
It is now 2012 and Samsung's UK TV appstore, the only one we have access to in the UK, still doesn't have the purchase infrastructure to support commercial apps.
Apple invented this first, samsung just copied it didnt you know, cant you see, it has a black border around the TV and the edges are round. Apple will come out with a TV, looks the same as this and will have the same features, will be made by samsung, and apple will say they copied them, cos they is apple they is, so they invented it all first :p
