Police cordoned off the area surrounding the 6-foot by 2-foot mine, which a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman said appeared to be live but not as explosive as a regular …

    The secret conversation...

"Miami Emergency Services need urgent training in explosive device response and evacuation procedures"

"But we don't have any budget!"

"Hold on, I've got an idea..."

If it had gone off in Miami city

It would have caused millions of dollars of benefit.

    WTF?

Red and white cylinder? "Mummeh, That looks like a chunk of a giant candy cane! May I lick plx?" - festive fun @ Miami beach!

In other news, navy officials have taken a clout over the ear and told not to leave explosive sugar sweets on the beach again.

    Wtf?

    reminds me....

That reminds me of the old Bob Newhart "Bomb Disposal" sketch...."you found a shell on beach? You know that's really not that unusual.....oh, it's that kind of shell"

    the famous beach......

    .... that's populated with condominiums.

I would have thought that's a sharply painful experience.

Oh, wait, it says 'populated' and 'condominiums'. My mistake.

      I suppose...

condominium is a type of single-element latex, but I couldn't find it on the periodic table.

    2. Tom 13

The first time I read it as

      "polluted with condominiums."

Although that might be more accurate now that I think about it...

    Stop

    Typo

...expected to be taken out to sea and reattached to the ocean floor, come loose, float to the surface and end up on a Miami beach, loaded on a truck and taken away, and is expected to be taken out to sea... etc.

Actually you did miss the "n" off "taken".

    Bah!

These things wash up all the time. Why, when I was a kid I saw several over the years when I went to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.

I was always afraid they'd go off and kill everyone in a shower of pennies, hapennies and threepenny bits.

    live?

Live, but not as explosive as a regular mine? Given the incompressibility of water, at all explosive does not sound like a good thing for the divers the Navy is training.

    'inexplicably came loose'

I think inexplicable might be the wrong word - the chain broke. Mystery solved - next the Loch Ness monster!

Navy - not the proper navy

It was confusing, I expected Lewis Page and the RN.
