How Times change...
I was mulling over this the other night. It doesn't seem that long ago to me that Russian elections were won with 90%plus majorities... Things may not be perfect but the world sure has changed.

Popular Russian radio station Moscow Echo and election-monitoring group Golos, the website of opposition weekly New Times as well as several other sites were left inaccessible …
... actually, not that much has changed!
Everything LOOKS democratic and "free" now, but the same power hungry mobsters are still ruling with the same set of dirty methods of oppression (just read the article once more, this time between the lines!).
They had to become a bit smarter and more subtle for the sake of foreign bucks, that's all.
Russia may not be the same totalitarian state as the former Soviet Union, but it committed a war of aggression against Georgia under Medvedev and Putin. It will be difficult even for a democratic Russian government to hand Medvedev and Putin over to Georgian authorities to be tried for the crime of aggressive war the way Tojo was - but that's what will be needed to convince the world Russia is serious about being a responsible member of the community of democratic nations.
