"they could reduce the power used by the radio and web browser by as much as 74 per cent, and this could be a big deal in for developing countries."

Another option might be for websites to reduce the amount of irrelevant carp on their websites.

Another option might be for connectivity providers (ISPs?) to introduce ISP-side ad-blocking. Whoops.

All this sounds very similar to what pioneering UK ISP Metronet (RIP) used to do several years ago - an optional configurable filtering compressing proxy/firewall between the punter and the Internet.

When I'm on the road, which I am at the moment, I browse on my fonldleslab via a VPN connection so that O2 doesn't compress images so much that they a barely recognisable. I don't notice any drop in speed, it seems fast enough without compression.

This is tethering over wifi from my Android phone, I don't know if they compress on the iPad data tariff so much.

    Should try

They should try porting MME (as used on the old Sony Z5/J5), it is somewhat smaller, less power hungry, quicker and capable of dealing with both real and mobile web and email.

Think that will provide a massive power saving over the modern rather clunky, large, bloated and slow browsers shipped on modern devices.
