Whole lot of shredding going on.
NT
This Sunday's News of the World will be the last ever. The massive-circulation newspaper is deeply embroiled in phone hacking and police bribery allegations. It has been printed for over 150 years. Despite its recent reputation for shag-n-tell stories about footballers it has a past history of decent investigative journalism …
While I will be suprised if News International doesn't launch a replacement for the Notw, that address is registered to a web design firm who (judging by the client list shown on their main website) would probably not be equipped to design and host a website for a major newspaper.
I think they are domain squatting..
Having lived in the north east for a number of years I heard the story.
The Sunday Sun is a name owned by the Journal/chronicle in Newcastle and was published regularly before the Sun decided to produce a sunday paper, hence the name News Of The World was used.
As far as I am aware The Sunday Sun is still being published in Newcastle, hence MGN are unable to use the name.
Is owned by the mirror newspaper group

Oddly registered many years after they sold the sun to murdochs lot.
Maybe some feature in the mirror I;m not aware of uses this name?
Oh yes, real consequences. The poor grunts at ground level are out on the street while the woman in charge of it all is still sitting in her executive post.
Oh yes, real consequences. News International gets an excuse to introduce redundancies and institute cost savings by running fewer newsrooms. There will almost certainly be a Sunday Sun in a couple of weeks' time, and it will save NI thousands.
There haven't been any consequences.
What we need to see is the editorial staff in prison.
We need very heavy fines, amounting to the entire profit of the paper for as long as they were hacking phones.
And we need a court order banning News International from *any* expansion for a substantial time period. No new newspapers, no new Sunday editions, and certainly no new acquisitions. For at least 5 years.
Anything less isn't punishment, because NI will still be up on the deal....
The lying scum have been preparing this for a while. The rats will just disperse to other parts of the empire and carry on as usual, as planned.
Need serious escalation of action against the whole company to actually make anyone pay for this.
And who believes it was just News International? More likely they just did is so much they couldn't help getting caught.
...the jail time can be served by the company owner, not just the grunt who forgot to put a barrier round the bottomless pit. But only if it can be seen that the person at the top was negligent in not providing training, making sure staff are working within their competency level.
Surely the charges raised from the the investigation can be applied to anyone up the food chain to the top.
There will be a lot of arse covering exercises going on now.
Now there's a coincidence... thesunday.co.uk registered TODAY! But "Colin Wilson Engineering" who registered it doesn't exactly sound like "News International". You never know though... But I suspect a smart bit of anticipation by Colin Wilson - well, smarter than me as he beat me to it!!
It currently says "Mediaspring", but there are several companies going by that name.
In interesting move for a URL squatter...
If NI want it free, they'll get it free through a simple domain name dispute. But they might just want to keep their heads down and but it for a couple of grand just to keep things quiet.
It always was a filthy rag. Before their current incarnation, they use to specialise in "exposing" ordinary people's sexual idiosyncrasies, allegedly sometimes resulting in the suicide of the 'target'. Hypocracy was always their stock-in-trade.
I certainly don't give a shit about the sacked NoTW "journalists" - Murdoch's media companies have a toxic effect on public life wherever they're based, & if you're paid the money, you've taken your choice
"But, regrettably it wont happen unless people stop buying their products or services"
Trouble is, if people stopped paying for his current crap Murdoch will use News Corps considerable cash reserves to buy out his most successful competitor. Newspapers are starting to lose money and that's why he wants the rest of BSkyB - minus the loss making newsroom, which is why he was happy to agree to selling that bit off, which had the added bonus of giving his poodles in government something to claim as a compromise.
As a tool for corruption and injustice, News International has nothing like the power of the EU, or even our own government.
Non-Murdoch media are enjoying this as much as you might expect, but let's keep a sense of perspective. Yes, the phone hacking was despicable, but was it worse than leaving elderly patients to starve in their own filth, as has happened in NHS hospitals.
How many people suggested that the NHS should be destroyed in response?
How does he manage to say these things? Really? Has he no shame at all, even if he is a Murdoch?
Anyway, the cynic in me would say that this is a desperate measure to stop the BSkyB deal unfolding, by dumping a publication that has no chance of being profitable for the foreseeable future.
But I am deeply cynical.
The plan of merging operation of The Sun and NotW was already rolling even before this week outcry, nothing is lost there but the toxic brand. The implementation of the future "Sunday Sun" is highly possible.
The incredible thing is that Rebekah B. still under full protection from Murdoch....
Private Eye reckons that Rebekah is heading off on maternity leave with her head held high and a seven figure pay-off.
Meanwhile Murdoch will now get the BSkyB takeover approved and extend the Sun to a Sunday edition (saving back-office costs), while Call-Me-Dave and Bonker-Boris (did you hear him this morning? F'ing sychophant) will not have to denounce the Evil Empire.
It's all turned out rather nicely for James and his Dad.
'"The incredible thing is that Rebekah B. still under full protection from Murdoch...."
Makes you wonder what else she knows about or has got up to over the years for News International to weather such a bad storm for her...'
According to one Beeb report she has said the revelations will continue for about a year. So the feeling of anger about this insightless creature's behaviour [ e.g., http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14088749 ] has to continue for a year. These people have to be given a whipping by public sentiment for their corruption.
And once all the huffing and hand-wringing are over - and once Darth Rupert has his hands on BSkyB - serious Street watchers may be wondering how long until there's more of the same.
The scandal isn't the phone tapping, it's the fact that News Int still exists at all as a political influence in the UK - and the US, and Australia, and in other countries.
This is not just about phone hacking, but a culture of muck-raking, muck-spreading, and pretending that invasion of privacy is in the public interest. Suggesting that all celebrities and politicians were fair game, is like shot-gunning a crowd of people, and justifying that you hit one bad person.
Let's hope that the rest of media doors-steps those responsible.
Murdoch's tabloid instincts have brought him to cannibalism! He's actually exploiting his own scandal to further his group's business interests.
Newspaper circulations are falling by the year. The Sun and NotW are separate operations with separate operational costs. He's probably been thinking for some time that it would be lovely to turn the NotW into the Sunday Sun, merge the operations into one office with one set of staff and thus streamline them both and reduce overheads. This is simply his opportunity to do it without the unions and staff moaning. It really is a gift to him.
The public will soon be bored with this scandal, just as it grew weary of MP's expenses, at which point the Sunday edition of The Sun will morph into the NotW, filled with OTT sensationalist scandals, fake sheikhs, celebrity gossip and all the other usual tripe.
Plus, Murdoch is trying to look good at the moment in order to get full control of Sky, which at one point it was touted that he's need to sell off some newspapers (if not all of them) . Well, technically, he now owns one fewer newspapers, and has 'proved' how moral and just he is by closing the NotW.
Rupert Graves's character in V for Vendetta couldn't have handled it any better.
A publicity stunt is all it is - at the end of this Mudoch will claim that he has "done the right thing" and that his News International business is clean.
The government will then happily wave through the BSkyB takeover - delighted at excuse they have been handed.
All the great and good will be smiling and happy while the rest of us can get lost as usual...
The Sunday Sun" is a local rag in the Newcastle and Middlesborough area owned by the Mirror Group. They also own the Sunday Mail" as the Sunday counterpart to the Daily Record in Scotland, so the Daily Wail calls their Sunday rag The Wail on Sunday.
I'm guessing either "The Sun on Sunday", or maybe even "The Sun".
The Notw closing is a distraction from the real issue here. Nearly all the papers have acted similarly.
In terms of using private detectives to rummage out stories the notw lagged behind the Fail, the Mirror, the sun and the torygraph.
Does anybody seriously believe that if someone discovers a way of getting juicy stories then competitors would follow suit?
I for one would bet unauthorised vm access (no it's not hacking) was rife among all of the fleet street rags.
were happy to email trojans to people etc. as well as listen to their VM, it is annoying when listening to voicemails is described as hacking(which in the public mind means "guy hunched over screen furiously typing while green text zooms past"). Though actually deleting voicemails is certainly analogous to hacking.
The Grauniad (& probably the Indy) are the only two nationals I can think of that aren't tainted.
Big, fat, hairy deal.
The Sun will no doubt be going into the Sunday print business, employing all the NotW staff within a month. The people at the helm will be protected and given golden handjobs, and nothing will have changed.
The nativity behind the move is more confounding. I can understand LulzSec being daft enough to think that if they quit while members were being nicked that investigations and arrests would be halted, but NotW? Seriously?
I was just saying to my wife this morning that if Murdoch had any sense he'd dump NoTW pronto, it's the only arse-covering measure he has left before the shit really hits the fan.
The big question is how many of the senior staff will do a Mandelson, and be brought back in through the swinging door in a few months? The ones that aren't in jail, of course.
OK, reality check. None of them will go to jail, more's the pity.
News Internationals argument will now turn into 'look how responsible we are; we shut the whole paper for you. We've proven ourselves to be really responsible over his issue, so we deserve to take over 100% of BSkyB'.
Problem solved for the politicians and News International. The status quo returns . Let the public think that they have won a great victory. Unfortunately the British public will lose the larger battle in September. The media world will have moved on by then.
It's a nice diversion tactic from 'look what the NOTW actually did to get shut down and who authorised it all'.
There have undoubtedly been back door discussions with No.10 going on. The government would also like this issue to go away. Murdoch has only shut the NOTW to safeguard his 100% takeover of BSKyB in September. A case of 'it'll all have died down by that time'. Cameron is in News Internationals back pocket and still will be in Sept. .
On Twitter - bengoldacre:
"bbc say staff in NOTW shouting in disbelief at losing jobs while Brooks keeps hers. feel like parable on modern britain </sanctimoniousness>"
Yes, I think I'd be shouting too.
Act 1: Do this, or be fired.
Act 2: You did this. Your're fired.
Act 3: Thank you Ms Brooks. A fine job. Here's your bonus.
It's worse than that.
The vast majority of those working there are recent recruits, so they didn't do it anyway. One of the very few people in the entire organisation who was actually around and involved in the hacking days is Crystal Tipps.
Basically they're firing 200 staff in an attempt to avoid giving her the push as, having many years as a senior NI filth-peddlar behind her, she knows where the bodies are buried and the dirt's hidden. This makes far more sense than Rupert and Rupert Lite (James) suddenly seeing the light and coming over all charitably sacrificial.
Sell your story to the competition
I somehow suspect that a lot of the staff will be now taking their email stash, private documents stash and a few other stashes and going to the Graunidad or the Independent with them.
Doing the "Classic British Plc" thing of "execs are never fired" works only if the staff does not possess material which will cost you 10 times the exec golden handshake in the long run. Considering the moral standards of the average British PLC exec team all junior staff should be assumed to have a stash of compromat 10 stories high (and this is not just NoW, other RIPA violators come to mind here too).
So if the staff is really fired (which I doubt), the scandal will soon grow to multiple times its current size and engulf the other Murdoch group newspapers.
As great as this announcement is, dont forget Monday morning there will be approx 2.5 million ex NOW readers looking for their new paper, where do they go? Daily Mail? The Sun? The Mirror? My bleeding heart, left wing sentiment says go pick up a Guardian or Independent, imagine the shock they'd have reading about events outside of the UK and stories that didn't involve footballs, their wives, girlfriends, Mistress' etc.
So lets celebrate now, but it will be interesting to see who picks up the slack in the circulation numbers.
What I hadn't realised was that this newspaper (using the term loosely) has run for 168 years. Perhaps a better otion would've been to follow the example below:.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8582593/Eight-million-gallons-of-water-drained-from-reservoir-after-man-urinates-in-it.html
Just clean it. Purge* would be severe, but would surely be a better alternative? Be rather a shame for a histerical ^W historical part of British ridicule ^W heritage to be thrown into the annals of history for the short-term actions of a few cretins.
I'm serious. To close it seems rather a hasty, ill-thought out decision.
*http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125915533 Good read, by the way.
Now the Beast is wounded and down lets get the pitchforks and have us a revolution. Whilst the politicians aren't running scared of Murdoch and his minions, it's time to circle the monster and despatch it quickly. If even prominent Tories like Nicholas Soames and Zac Goldsmith are calling for a review of BSkyB takover, not just the lefties and people with an Axe to grind like Prescott, the time is right.
As for all those lacky's "if it wasn't for Murdoch" like Toby Young this morning on Radio 4, well they can just feck off back up his arse because the world is better without his media misinformation empire. He's a threat to democracy.
To paraphrase ColonelClaw, go-on, fuck off
..i've been evangelising against murdoch for years for precisely those reasons; its just hard to get people to understand their fun soaraway Sun is in fact the tool of the devil, and is just one big titted distraction while The Beast shits, pukes and pisses all over democracy, the rule of law and freedom of speech. The whole mob of NI and newscorp should be taken out and shot as far as I'm concerned, but I;m just an old leftie. Firm but firm, thats me...Johnny Turk would have known what to do with 'em,,tie 'em to a post in no-mans-land mutter mutter..
In fact *very* f**king hard to believe.
This looks like a well planned doomsday retreat.
Dump the deadwood (I'm sure Ms Brooks has her little list of journos who've not been "productive" enough for taste or a bit too active on behalf of their various unions).
I smell phoenix liquidation.

I guess there'll be quite a few disgruntled folk losing their jobs on the paper. Probably at least some of them are innocent, so I'll be looking forward to any beans they might want to spill over the next few days about the not-so-innocent bar-stewards who've sacked them .
I have a feeling there's still a huge amount to come out yet - and we still haven't even started on the other papers...
Chop the infected limb off.
The troops who know what was done when and sanctioned by whom scattered in a star burst.
By the time the inquiry starts, no one can locate the troops as they have left to who knows where, inquiry closes.
Mr. Mudoch sits back smokes cigar and chuckles, as he is driven up to Sky HQ saying (in an Aussy voice "was like driving a stick up a greasy dogs arse!" Takes another puff.
The Sunday Sport folded some years ago, now the Screws is no more!
Yet this woman still does not have the balls to stand up and be counted!
Most of us will never know the adulation nor the money of the famous, nor will we have anywhere near as much sex as the powerful
But every Sunday we could tut tut them with a misguided sense of moral superiority as the Screws lay bare their feet of clay
Do you think I will buy a Mail on Sunday from my £1million house?
Perhaps the Observer will idle away the time as I take the Eurostar to Tuscany?
No no no the Dirty Digger MUST MUST MUST revive the mix of moral outrage and soft porn that was NoW
Either that or he will see his empire collapse all for the lust of a red head's !!!!
that the NotW journalists have collected so much dirt on our politicians (including the PMs and cabinet) that they dare not humiliate Murdoch any more! Else, skeletons from the creakign cupboards will come crashing out and dragiing everyone with them.
Its a classic blackmail scenario. ( Cameroon winked at Rebekah and asked this closing down down as the best face saving/whitewashing option).. The storm will pass and life will go on.
Look what happened to Vince Cable when he tried to rein in Murdoch dominance!
Resistance is futile.

I used to not mind Murdoch or his empire. Not because I approve of it, but because I didn’t care.
I don’t read his newspapers or watch his TV channels because they are as much “news” outlets as I am a flying pink unicorn with magical super powers.
However this has frustrated me, because by closing a newspaper and then opening another exact duplicate up under a different name a week later, he obviously thinks people are fucking idiots.
It makes me so god damned angry I wish I was a flying pink unicorn with magical super powers so I could rain horrible rainbow death down upon people like Murdoch and that ginger cow he fancies so much, and then politicians they need to burn in rainbow agony as well… sod it I’ll just burn the world in rainbows and rebuild it in my very own pink unicorn image!
… I need a lie down, in a dark room, and bring tranquilizers… lots of tranquilizers…
Im not sure if I am right or wrong - but I suspect that Murdock et al arent in this to make a profit. If they kill the entity that is NoTW, it will kill all the lawsuits and charges against it since it is no longer a extant entity. Which means all the people suing NoTW (and for good reason, mind you) will be suing nothing but a shell which I suspect will have no legal requirement to pay out since it doesnt exist...
If that is the case, and I am no lawyer, that will mean the families concerned will have to sue the individuals, which will cost them worlds more in money - which will probably mean the cases will fall flat on their faces... not due to the cases themselves being faulty, but due to the people pursuing the cases against Murdock et all not having the resources to pull back from suing NoTW and retrench into suing the actual individual people concerned...
So its Win-Win for the bastards of the world *sigh*. Quelle Surprise.

"Im not sure if I am right or wrong - but I suspect that Murdock et al arent in this to make a profit. If they kill the entity that is NoTW, it will kill all the lawsuits and charges against it since it is no longer a extant entity."
Yes, I have. It happened in a company where I once worked, and the result was human misery. That is why Cameron's (perhaps reluctant, but prodded on by Clegg and Millipede) choice of independent judicial enquiry is important. This is a chance to grasp. In 1989 David Mellor warned the press they were drinking at the last chance saloon [ http://www.sirc.org/articles/last_chance_saloon.html ]. Perhaps in the longer sense of the word it will be seen that they were. They have been trading in human misery and personal secrets for too long. Their relationships with the police of all things indicate that News International have at a high level been malfeasant, inasmuch that it was stated, first by Rebekah Wade, and then by Andy Coulson who on *public record* said that they PAID the police and that it's 'within the law' [ http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/video/2011/jul/07/news-of-the-world-denials-video ].
It's a truism in occupational psychology that the behaviour of employees, irrespective of grade, can only be understood by assessing further up the hierarchy to see where the trail ends. After so many years of bad behaviour I am ineluctably drawn to the conclusion that Murdoch himself is the original source of the problems with News International.
That matters had come to a point where all main major politicians felt it necessary to curry favour with him, to tailor their policies and behaviour to suit the cut of Murdoch's jib says even more.
This business has to be kicked out. There is currently enough public outrage at them for what has happened, and this has to persist; they are holding onto Rebekah Wade, which is excellent; it means that her superior and his superior have identified with, and are supporting one of the central sources of the problem, and they can now be challenged for this long period of malfeasance. Certainly they can never be allowed to touch Sky News, and the prospect of breaking up the conglomerate has to be publicly and very strongly aired and advocated, in as many outlets as possible, including this publication.
They have to go. We cannot allow self appointed foreign press barons to shape the policies of our governments, but we have done. They have gone too far. Time to smash them into small pieces, and then dump them on the pavement, beyond the boundaries marked "UK".
I didnt know that the MG6 was being ordered by the Government....
But seriously.
This is just more of the same from Conservatism. Public opinion is of little meaning to them and I am fairly sure that this will end up as another "its not murder, cos we wont let you decide its murder" government coverup special. Every one will know its what it is, the government will know its what it is, and everyone will studiously ignore the large Mastodon thats sitting in the corner in a Saville Row suit, attempting to look innocent. And the really fun part is we'll end up voting for them again next time - business as usual for a country on a planet run by psychotic monkeys...
The tabloids have broken so many different laws it'd be easier to list the ones they havent as list the ones they have.
But the point stands - they have broken laws and cost people their lives - and they've gotten away with it. They will continue to get away with it until they are forcibly stopped with proper privacy & protection laws that dont have plot holes a blind grandmother could pilot the Enterprise-E through. It would be nice too if the police actually bothered to enforce the laws concerned. I know for a fact a girl I know was murdered and dumped in the local river because someone had told others that she was transsexual, incorrectly as it turned out, which is against UK law, but the police not only ignored that fact, they blackened her name saying she was a drug dealer (which for a girl who never touched alcohol...). NoTW & the Daily Wail et al did exactly the same thing with a German girl but thats ok, because theyre a paper.
I would be very interested from any one in the know if its possible for the British Govt to force a company to close down entirely - much as the US Govt/Treasury did to Lehmans - because this would be an ideal solution. Dismantle and destroy Murdoch for good, which would send one hell of a warning to all the other bottom-feeders that you piss around with murder victims families at your peril.
"This is just more of the same from Conservatism."
It clearly is the case that Murdoch et al. should not assume sovereign powers and determine policies. Dismissive use of the argumentum ad hominem in a culturally relative form ("This is just more of the same from Conservatism.") is not even remotely valid argumentation, though I'm sure that you are satisfied with it, or you would not have used it; my point is that this (cultural relativism and the argumentum ad hominem) is the weakest form of logic and epistemology. Much better to go with the facts, and my purpose in citing the origins of the debate is, well, to lay down a marker in addition to the 1969 one that I cited later.
Listen to the latest World At One on the BBC's site and you will hear this clearly coming out from all sides. The end clip, with Murdoch accusing those who decry his sleazy journalism as jealousy, is enlightening. No words are added, and it is clear that the Beeb for once are allowing the interviewee to condemn himself out of his own mouth.
Murdoch et al. must go. However, it is not an easy task to break up a company. Monopoly laws are one thing but not, I suspect, relevant here since there are many competitors. Listen to Portillo and Clarke on the Daily Politics to see how this might play out. It will be complex. It will be painful. It may even be that Murdoch's anointed will find herself on the wrong end of her own tactics, as the sacked journalists bring out their personal compendia of notes, recordings, receipts and other forgotten dirt.
As far as deaths are concerned, this is just what happened to Denholm Elliot's daughter. I heard the NoTW journalist concerned apologise for it on Radio 4 the other day, whilst also admitting that this was fruitless because everyone concerned (mother included) is now dead; what he did was to write an article about her prostitution, drug addiction and so on. She hung herself [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denholm_Elliott and http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1433889 and http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b012bxf8
]. So yes, it has to stop and the only way it will stop if people participate. Perhaps at some point a critical mass can be achieved at the expense of this sleazy group.
This will be messy, and I hope that a lot of ordinary people put their weight behind the process of downfall.
I'm grateful to the Murdochs for their transparent and cynical ploy to stay in the game, by making The Sun a 7 day newspaper. This ought to be a knot in the noose.
He condemns the behaviour of the paper and then supports the woman who, for at least part of the problem, was "in charge". Being "in charge" and taking a huge salary for making the decisions means you are also responsible.
By keeping her on he condones, actively supports, the behaviour that led to these scandals. This means we can safely conclude the other media - paper and tv - under his control have been goven the green light to act in this fashion.

C'mon, we all know that if we discover a scandal of this proportion now, those who are involved have know about it for ages. So it's reasonable to assume there have been contingency plans prepared for most eventualities.
So they put up their hands, gasp in horror and look shocked - but we don't 'buy it'.
Next they implement an investigation - curiously already strangling it's credibility by appointing one of the suspected party as chief investigator - we are even more outraged.
Suddenly, in a major show of attrition, they axe the publication without a fight and in a grand manner, one of the CEO's pleads remorse for their actions citeing niavete as the main cause.
Anyone who has a basic understanding of military stratergy can see this for what it is - one big manouver to camoflage another - and no, I'm still not 'buying it'.
But don't let it worry you - this only the tip of the iceberg anyway... you'll never hear about what's REALLY going on ... MUAHAHA!!!
