back to article Spanish cops rush to cuff 'webcam killer'

Spanish police yesterday swiftly arrested a man who stands accused of murdering his wife and then showing the body to his father in Romania via webcam. According to El Mundo, the father immediately called Romanian police, who in turn alerted their Spanish counterparts. Just 45 minutes later, 21-year-old "DM" was detained at …

nothing suitable comes to mind ...

Kind of puts your own problems into perspective, doesn't it?

    Good reaction time

Honestly, I would not have thought that the Romanian police could make the Spanish police act within 45 minutes.

We often complain about cops, but we should not forget to praise them when they do something right.

      Hmmmm...

Well for 2 phone calls and a quick drive from the cop shop you'd think they might be able to do better than 45 minutes when there is a life at stake!

However, it's better than some of the times you hear for the UK cops and certainly far better than trying to get assistance from an out of hours doctors.

Too young or to forgetful to remember the good old Cold War times?

          Re: "Hmmm..." ???

Nope, old enough and with good enough recall to remember the iron curtain rusted away over a decade ago.

      no kidding

on past experience I'd not have thought that anything this side of the 2nd coming of Christ, complete with choirs of angels, would make the Spanish police do _anything_ in under an hour. The Romanians must be bloody supermen.

Dammed if you do and .....

Hats off to the police this time, and I guess someone in the force is breathing a sigh of relief that they jumped the correct way. This could so easily have taken 2 days of discussion before going round and finding several bodies. Alternatively it could also have ended in bad headlines as "heavy handed cops storm a house to arrest a bloke due to a prank caller". It's a tough call and too many people are too quick to judge and condemn.

There's rarely a problem when police break in to try to save someone.

The usual problem is that they then charge an innocent person with resisting arrest or a terrorist charge to save face.

    Amazingly fast response time

Wonder if Interpol were involved in this to get the problem translated to the Spanish police, or if there just happened to be someone in the police station who could speak Spanish.

Or is there some kindof European police quick lookup system these days?

      Linguistic considerations

Romanian and Spanish are more closely related than you might suspect. And there are quite a few Romanians living in Spain, so if they couldn't communicate clearly the Spanish police may well have been able to get a translator in sharpish.

        Re: Linguistic considerations

Indeed, Romanian, Spanish and Italian are all very closely related.

I have a Romanian friend who used to live in Italy. He said he could understand pretty much everything they said, and they could understand him (when he wanted them to!).

Now if it was the Hungarian Police speaking to Spain, now that would be interesting!

    Torrejon de Ardoz

Lived there for a couple of years half a lifetime ago. Still have fond memories of taking the evening walk and staying connected with the neighbors. It used to be a nice neighborhood, I wonder how much it has changed.

Beer because at the time if you could order and pay for it, you could have it. Something I appreciated greatly at the tender age of 16...

      @AC

Even the mother of the victim had the grace to admit that the perpetrator clearly needed help, but you think it would be easier just to execute him, how very refreshing in these enlightened times.

    Hmmm

Makes you wonder that if this guy had received the help he obviously needs so efficiently before the event, maybe the girl and her child would still be alive.

They acted fast but the tragedy had already happened. Yeah, there was a chance that she may not have been dead so that was probably what prompted the fast response. Plus the fact that they must have either known about the guy and/or had received compelling information that he was "ill".

    Very sad.

"if this guy had received the help he obviously needs so efficiently before the event"

Ahh the good old psychic doctors / social workers / police failed again....

Odd, but unless someone tells them, there is nothing they can do.....strange that.
