Everyone now-a-days thinks that their devices are going to change the way we interact with the world and revolutionise computing. This looks like a great big FAIL.
Too much going on, too many slidey panels, too much stuff that wants to constantly update itself. Looks like it may be halfway useful in a work environment but not quite.
What I love about the iPad is it's simplicity and the fact that it's impossible for me to do any serious work on it. It's for sitting on the sofa, surfing the net and playing crappy games while watching the TV. Tablets will never be anything more than that.

Your iPad is the classic example of a largely useless device unless you have the whole nine yard: desktop Mac, iPhone, Mobile Me etc - all things any self-respecting iTard supposed to buy, per Steve "Freedom from Porn" Jobs, Puritan-in-Chief's "recommendations".
Anyone wants to push iPad, a tablet that cannot run Flash, as an internet device is clearly either an utterly clueless loudmouth or an astroturfer, sorry.

It seems to me an awful lot of people just want that experience. Don't want to worry about codecs, don't want to worry about why their battery performance is erratic, etc. etc.
You seem to be missing the point that the OP wants an internet appliance in the same way he wants a washing machine or any other home appliance, simple to use, simple to maintain and consistent in what it does.

Two sides to the story; this is why we need choices and hence iOS, Android and Meego. And, though it pains me, Windows too (possibly). I personally loathe the brain-off Apple approach (and its habit of turning people into sheep all following its locked-down, restrictive pyschosis) but that's just me. Also highly dubious about what Google will do with Android (there's "open" and there's "open"). Microsoft has already proved itself countless times on this score.

Well I'm sure Paris has an iPad. But I'm also sure that very few people will have a MeeGo based tablet. This is a two horse race between iOS and Android, which Android will win. However Apple will pick up the prize money since Android just won the race to the bottom.
If Nokia had hired someone from Google rather than Microsoft perhaps things would have been different. I bought a tablet device (Nokia 770) years before Apples iPad, but unfortunately no one else bought one. Came with a stylus and was poorly supported by Nokia. They blew it from my perspective as a customer.
The N770 was followed by the N800, N810 and N900. The original Maemo OS2006 was updated to OS2007, OS2008 and Maemo 5.
There is plenty of software for these. Importantly for me is Python and Glade to build applications that run unchanged on Maemo, Linux desktop and Windows.
They are fine pocket machines.
It WAS too slow.
Now, maybe the settings can be adjusted to reduce the delay before the context menu pops up, but looking at other moments of lag, I just had an imaginary LED flickering as it struggled to thrash an imaginary hard-drive to swap it's virtual memory out and load the menu. (remember Windows?)
It was pathetic.
they can then drive meego in a manner of their choosing. even if anti poaching agreements exist between them at least for the alliance, i don't see nokia in a position to enforce such an agreement now.

So their homescreen looks like 3 phones bolted together, there's no examples of multi touch (does the OS have it? surely it does) and everything requiring that agonizing long-press.
Why can't the music browser be launched from the 'music panel'?

You need to realise that tablets are toys, they are not PCs. Any tablet trying to be a PC is in for FAIL. The Intel MeeGo thing looks like it wants to replace my laptop....it will fail badly. The iPad is a toy that can't do shit but surf the net and play crappy games. I love it for that. I am under no illusions regarding the iPads limitations. IMHO it's not even worth jailbreaking
If I am a fanboi, then it'll be for Linux. Typing this on my Debian testing laptop, see that I did over 2300 hours (walltime) of computing last night on Red Hat clusters around the world.......
Can I still tap a few buttons and bring up Bash? Seriously, that's like the best thing about having a Maemo device - underneath it all, it's Debian. If I can have a panel on there that tails our site logs off to one side of what I'm doing, you've sold me. I'll buy two.
And no, Android users, don't tell me you can do the same. The SSH clients I've tried on my Desire are all crap. The best multitasking system I've used is Maemo, and this also looks better for the way I work.
Why does everyone just immediately jump on and say 'Apple iOS is loads better' - 'Not as good as Android' etc etc. Choice is a good thing everyone. What you prefer someone else will hate. I love it when there is a few to choose from instead of just two.
I personally hate the iOS way of doing things (Grid of icons, scroll right, ooh look more icons ad nauseum, no 'interface' at all). I also dislike the Android interface just ported to tablets as they are NOT phones, they should be treated as a different device, Android 3 looks promising tho. Windows 7 doesn't work either as it NEEDS a keyboard and mouse. I quite like the look of this Meego mallarkey and I hope it does actually get used on a device or two.

You serious?! The iPad is just the iTouch/iPhone interface with more icons on the home screen! That can be good or bad, I'm not putting an opinion here.
Whilst current droid tablets are using 2.x (or older in some cases), Honeycomb is now out, thats a totally different interface...
Im not stating an opinion which is better, just stating Apple just added more app icons to the home screen (and added some other features), google HAS changed the entire homepage experience with Honeycomb... So they are DIGGING at Apple not Google....
Honeycomb may be an improvement, but I was talking about the versions of Android which have been used up until now, and I strongly suspect the guy in the article was too.
The UI and apps in iOS are very well optimised for the device they're running on, be that iPhone or iPad.

To be fair, that's exactly what people claimed about the Ipad too.
Me, I prefer sitting on the sofa with a netbook. Give me a real keyboard anytime, a real OS, and I much prefer the way it sits nicely on my lap, without me having to hold it (or look directly down on it, getting a sore neck). Touchscreens on netbooks will become common soon enough I bet anyway, making the distinction irrelevant.

Why is that bad? It was optional, surely? I prefer a stylus for the extra precision and avoiding wiping muck on the screen, though fingers can be used for brief periods too.
The 770 stylus was was bad as it was there to be lost. Using your finger wasn't really an option as the ui was so small. Handy for scratching your chin though. The other downside of a stylus is you look a complete nerd using it in public. Though I admit you look like a nerd with friends using an iPhone.
While I'm moaning about Nokia's 770 they also blew the plastics they used, it was brittle and had
to be replaced with little wear. They were slow to revise the OS then annoyed anyone who bought
one by releasing an updated device for which OS wasn't backwardly compatible.
At least with Apple you have a year or so hardware wise. Even my iPhone from 2007 will run a lot of the apps released now. With Nokia I get a general impression they just don't care about customer experience. I say that after having written for Symbian which was a complete pain. You had to get a note from your Mum if you wanted to use some of the APIs.
