we've already migrated a couple of dozen servers to the cloud (AWS/Linode). That means I wont be upgrading a couple of dozen servers this time around. I understand my 'virtual' servers are being shared by at least a dozen other users.. so that's a lot of savings somewhere too and lost opportunity for hardware vendors.

Profit motive

'The cloud is democratic' is such BS. Companies that host/provide clouds are in it for the money. If there's no money to be had, they won't provide the service. Democracy is only useful until the profit disappears.
