Excellent!

Now it's digital and IP-based, it'll be much easier to give every single citizen access to this information- democratising surveillance, and letting the people police the police. Not to mention creating the potential for crowdsourced law-enforcement (not vigilantes as such, just things like letting amateurs write ANPR code to use the camera feeds to help police bus lanes when the council can't be arsed to do it or allowing them to capture video of suspected drug dealers to relay to the police).

Oh good! even less Police on the Streets

CCTV Camera's have been shown to do nothing to reduce crime or the effects on Crime.

But on the upside these can be used to clock your average journey time and issue tickets based on the assumption that if you get home too quickly you must have been speeding somewhere.

Just imagine the revenue rolling in....

Generally there is insufficient detail to be able to prosecute from CCTV in town centres - it's only there to direct plod towards the scrotes.

I live in a highly CCTV'd London borough and they use it to move along 'problem drinkers' and not much more. That and directing the traffic nazis towards someone who was merely thinkng of stopping to answer thier phone or drop off stuff at the local charity shop.

So let's have every Sky subscriber given the option of a one-time discount off their bundle every time they use the Sky CCTV facility to get someone nicked. Leave the police to focus on the things the general public can't do (kill innocent bystanders and face no consequences, stuff like the Met do on a regular basis)

The police's interest in CCTV is crime solving, it does not matter if you are seriously assaulted or murdered provided they can identify the culprit because it then becomes a solved crime in the statistics. I am sure most people would prefer a few plod around on the streets and not being assaulted or murdered.
