BBC Online is mostly back online now, after serious problems overnight and early this morning. Reg readers emailed to report problems from 3am UK time until just before 9am this morning. For most the site was either unavailable, or loading extremely slowly. A BBC spokeswoman said: "Some people have been experiencing problems …

We were having problems with one of our sites that uses newsrss.bbc.co.uk at around 2am. At that time this entry was missing from DNS making the site pages load slowly. Back now though.

    Don't panic!

I'm probably not the only one who thought that something truly awful must have happened when the BBC News site went down, remembering what happened to it on 9/11 and 7/7.

    Blame the Mail

I just assumed the Daily Mail was somehow jamming it...

    Things have Changed

They now have a BBC ID for people contributing to blogs and Have Your Say. I'm sure that wasn't there yesterday.

I've also noticed that their audio streams seem to be broken more often since the RealAudio streams were discontinued in favour the iPlayer stuff. My local radio station this morning didn't work via the WM stream, although the iPlayer one seemed OK.

I have to admit I wondered whether there was some sort of DDOS attack going on.

    @Don't panic!

Damn right - I had to check sickipedia to make sure nothing cataclysmic had happened!

    Funny how...

... the media uses 'the whole world' to refer to 'some people' when they want to make a point, and 'some people' to refer to 'the whole world' when they want to dodge a truth.

    But what happened???

I eMailed the Reg about this about 6 this morning, I'd love to know what happened that took the BBC offline (including it seems the DNS servers).

So much for 'large' organisations having properly set up systems to avoid downtime...

    Siemens?

The BBC website hosting isn't done by Siemens now is it? According to Lord Gnome's wonderful organ they have been doing a less than stellar job with the rest of the BBC tech infrastructure recently...

    Al happened earlier than acknowledged

I had a problem accessing the BBC site from 16:00 on the 5th, when an iPlayer feed I was listening to stopped. Trying to access bbc.co.uk produced a rather dubious looking holding page (copy available on request). Certainly looked to me like they'd been hacked, most likely via their DNS.
