"Losing my job over it was just one more blow below the belt," he said.
Nicely done, very smooth.
The inflexible nature of the Swedish government's employment policies was starkly illustrated this week, after a would-be care assistant was forced out of his job after taking on an internship in a porn shop. Niclas Nilsson has accused his local employment office of discrimination following being axed from his part-time job as …
As in temporary unpaid work with emphasis on on-the-job training.
What on-the-job training is needed to be a cashier, even one in a smut shop?
How to count? How to swipe a bar code? Or how to not look disgusted when the customer buys some scat porn?
Most shop-front volunteers (which is basically what he was) tend to go work for charity shops instead. I'm not all that surprised that his boss didn't look kindly on the type of volunteer work he chose to do.
my wife dragged me through practically every porn shop, loudly shouting to the doorway where I was lurking about some weird fetish dvd or other. Everyone in there looked horrified.
Apparently Amsterdam is only liberal towards men in their sex shops.
In fact, one owner commented to me..
owner: you are very lucky man
me:why?
owner:you're wife lets you shop in here
me:she's the one that dragged _me_ in here!
I only mention this because the article indicated that only dirty old men part with cash in these types of shop. And no, my wife isn't a dirty old man (to my knowledge) :P
What's wrong with taking a temporary job at that kind of shop, so much so they aren't safe to care for people? It isn't like they were breakaing the law in any way, and the cashier doesn't even have to be doing anything morally dubious just serving customers (no sniggering).
Yet another example of the world being way too uptight, as miuch as I hate the term. Too many prudes in the world.
I would indeed like to see a well-reasoned explanation for why he can't work as a cashier. Would it have been okay if he had worked in a liquor shop? How about a gun shop? Additionally, how exactly did bossman "stumble" upon this discovery?

"As in temporary unpaid work with emphasis on on-the-job training."
Let me guess - you are probably a defender of the minimum wage, too?
... here in the UK the Independant Barring Board would be nodding their heads at the sagacity of the Swedish decision since, under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act if you have anything to do with pornography involving "violence against adults" (ie BDSM material that's entirely legal in Sweden) then you're obviously a dangerous individual who cannot be trusted to care for others...
Perhaps I know the difference between you're and your and it was just a small lapse in concentration (especially considering the memory I was recollecting at the time).
Penis.
Thanks to others for calling time on his pedandtic shennanigans.
The owner of the shop was Turkish btw, not Dutch :/ Almost all the Dutch people I know speak perfect English. they prefer it, they say, to getting throat cancer by speaking Dutch all the time!
The worst part of the whole episode was that my wife bought the weird dvd. Some months later a builder was in our house and had to move the video storage cupboard, and lo and behold - what this stashed away underneath? Man I got some stick for that one - who the hell is going to believe someone in such circumstances saying 'It's not mine, it's the wife's".
No-one, that's who.
Paris: coz my wife is filthier than Paris Hilton performing a threesome with animals in a sewer. (I'm not *that* lucky - she's all talk)
Porn/Eroticism/Fetish are huge industries, what the hell is wrong with working in a smut shop? It's not different to working in, say, Boots as a cashier. If you're unemployed getting *some* skills is better than getting no skills, surely?
@AC 14:12 - At least this chap was *trying*, which is better than most of the unemployed wastes of space that we have here. So the skills he get are "menial" from your ivory tower, but inventory control, stock ordering, cash handling etc are important to trades and if he turns out to be good at them; he can get better jobs using those skills.
I really can't see what the problem is. Even if he was working with kids, I couldn't see the problem (unless he brought is "other" work to class, of course). I mean...c'mon; just because you like a some toys/bit of slap 'n tickle/whatever does not make you a bad person. I just means you are human.
Of course, what I want to know is how did the staff at the employment office find out he was working in a porn shop.
Eh? . . . . . eh? . . . . . . Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more, say no more…..
Quick, put the staff at the employment office on the sex offenders register, won't somebody think of the children.
Paris, who also knows a lot about "double jobbing", know wot I mean, nudge nudge, wink wink
The sale of various adult toys is not restricted to sex shops or Ann Summers etc.
The equivelent of Currys over here - Media Markt - has a section with various Dildos, Love Eggs, Vibrators etc. It was a bit of a shock when I was bimbling round looking for a new video card. There they were at the end of one aisle, where a man and a womed were discussing which one to buy.
This Swedish bloke would be basically disbarred from working in most of the major electrical retailers.
When she's in the Netherlands, Paris shops in Media Markt
Sir Runcibles tale had a similar feel to one of my own!
When we were both about 20 me and the missus were wandering through London one night and she decided she'd like to see a porn store. Never been in one before, wondered what it was like.
We'd been in there for about 2 minutes looking at various DVDs before a member of staff approached us and asked to see her ID!!! He didn't actually ask me, so I can only assume he thought I was grooming her!
On topic - this sucks harder than the devices he sells! Especially in such a sexually liberal country!
