The iPhone has been elected as Britain's "coolest brand", knocking Aston Martin off the top of the CoolBrands list of desirables that it has dominated for three years. CoolBrands chairman Stephen Cheliotis said: "The iPhone is something everyone's been talking about. There has been such a buzz around it - and people that haven …

    iPhones are shite

My wife was told her trusty Samsung mobile (supplied by her employer) was being replaced by an iPhone. A week or so later she called me from work and said "guess what?" I guessed she now had her iPhone and she asked how I knew. I told her "it's easy to tell. You sound like you're talking through a drain pipe with a mouthful of cotton wool". I wondered if she was in the middle of giving her boss a BJ to say thanks for the small shiny object of delight but no, it always sounds like that.

PS She also said "look, it has a compass". I told her when i was a kid I had pair of shoes with a compass *and* animal footprints moulded into the heel. I win, iPhones suck arse.

    iPhone Hate

Why do Register readers hate (and I mean really HATE, not just dislike a bit) the iPhone and iPhone users? While some people might have one because they think it makes them look cool, most people that have one do so because they (gasp) like the iPhone. I like the interface, I prefer the on-screen keyboard (on which I can type 40 wpm) to the physical keyboards on other smart phones, and I like that there's a large selection of apps available for it.

I had no real need for an iPhone for personal use, but I bought one because I was writing iPhone apps, and the simulator could only go so far. Since I got it though, I've come to like many aspects of it, and wouldn't trade it for another phone. There are some things I don't like, such as the fact that AT&T sucks, and you can't set the volume of an alarm separate from the general phone volume, but overall I really like it. If you don't like it, fine. There are plenty of other phones out there. There's no reason to make fun of people who do like it though.

BTW. @Rob - The Veyron? What's cool about the Veyron? It's ugly, expensive and heavy. Yeah, it's fast, but that doesn't make it cool. If I had to choose between an Aston and a Veyron, I'd choose the Veyron. But then I'd sell it, buy an Aston (a much cooler car), and have lots of cash left over. (btw, Aston Martin is much cooler than the iPhone. It's also an actual UK brand, unlike the iPhone)

Nah, an Aston is cooler than a Bugatti Veyron. Using the KST "Top Gear cool wall" test methodology, she'd recognise the car as an Aston and instantly end up in bed with you (appropriately enough, some stages ommitted), whereas the Bugatti you'd have to point out its 1001 horsepower, its 10 radiators, that it lowers itself in motion, etc.

Using the same methodology the iPhone is instantly uncool as at least one of the Top Gear cast have an iPhone (Jeremy, and with his hair I'd expect Hammond to have one too).

Anyway, iPhone is never going to be cooler than an Aston. Proofs- pull up outside a pub with an Aston and make a call on your iPhone. Which one gets the most attention?

    Alternatively, say the following phrases-

"Lets go out to dinner in the Aston"

"Hey, I'm out for dinner. Call me back on my iPhone"

Which one makes you sound like a twat?

How about- picture the following in a Bond movie.

"I'd have a bottle of Dom Perignon '53 (not served over a temperature of 38F... and I'll have some earmuffs to go with the Beatles soundtrack too)"

"Which wine do I want? Gimme a minute- there's an app for that on my iPhone..." or

"hey, look how this thing zooms pictures!"

or how about the slightly sillier

"Now pay attention 007. You'll be equipped with an iPhone 3Gs with modifications. See this red button? Whatever you do don't press it."

    "Oh, and why not?"

"Because it's rigged to blow up."

    "A one-button self destruct? You're joking!"

"Well, some steps have been ommitted..."

Anyway, the demographic for this is clearly art/media students, or possibly people from a small area of London. No-one else would say "coolest brand? Hmm... the Tate Modern art gallery. Yeah."

As for the popularity thing, you watch how many American shows have their actors caressing iPhones - maybe even a few Brit shows (hide the logo, you still know what you're looking at), and you try giving your kid an MP3 player when everyone at their school has an iPod - his love will turn to hate in milli seconds.

    The definition of cool?

If the majority thinks it's cool, it isn't. With the really cool stuff, 90% of people won't even have heard of it, let alone think to vote for it in some crappy survey.

This is just a list of things the majority of people would like to have. Which makes all of it uncool. All of it.

And guys, I'm afraid modern Astons are no longer cool, however much you wish that was the case. Since they're no longer hand-made and you see them everywhere, they are today's 1980s stockbroker Porsche 911.

And whatever your Top Gear addled man-brain tells you, they don't have this mystical effect on women. How do I know? Well I'm lucky enough to hang around with guys and girls who can drive any car they want. And the cars the girls buy for themselves? A Mini or Fiat 500. And the cars the girls LOVE their guys to drive? A Morgan, an E-Type, or a classic Aston DB4. Modern Maseratis are cool. But now I've told you this, you'll think they're cool too, so they're no longer cool.

Newsflash: Apple doesn't love you back.

I hate the iPhone because it's too big, it severely lacks flexibility, has taken too long to get even basic features in (i.e. MMS), despite being so big doesn't have a removable battery amongst other things.

The fact is it's just not a good device, it's more expensive, and much too bulky compared to other cheaper, but better engineered, more open, more pleasant to use, less intrusive devices like the HTC Android handsets, the Palm Pre and so on for example.

The only reason you'd have an iPhone is if you're gullible enough to fall for the brand in the first place, if you want attention because other people fall for the hype and mistakenly think it's a decent device without having ever seen one, or because you outright oddly just like inferior devices at higher prices.

The fact is, you just have to be quite stupid to pay so much for a bulky, poorly engineered (it explodes ffs!!!), horribly locked down device when you could just pay less and get better.

Funny how you claim the iPod is too big (5.18 cu in, 4.70 oz) when it's smaller and lighter than the Palm Pre (6.24 cu in, 4.76 oz), Blackberry Storm (5.97 cu in, 4.80 oz) and T-Mobile G1 (6.16 cu in, 5.6 oz). Maybe you're referring to the fact that its screen being bigger than any of those three. If the screen is "too big," then that's fine with me.

Your opinion might be that it's not as good as other phones, but it's just that - an opinion, not fact at all. In the 11 years that I've had a cell phone, I have not once had the need or desire to buy an extra battery or replace the existing one. The phone my iPhone replaced was 5 years old, so it's not like I replace my phone so often that I replace the whole thing rather than the battery. I'd bet money that less than 5% of cell phone users ever replace the battery. It's just not a big deal that it's not user replaceable (if in the very unlikely event I ever do need to replace it, I can send it in).

While I've been a Mac user for 20 years, I wasn't "gullible" and didn't "fall for the brand." I don't say "oooh! Apple! Must buy!" I didn't buy the first or second iPhones because they didn't have the features I wanted. I bought the 3GS because it did (and because the aforementioned need to have a physical device to develop on). I don't buy Apple monitors, or other components from Apple (RAM, drives, etc) because they're too expensive and I can get equivalent products elsewhere. I certainly don't want attention for having an iPhone. I don't even really use it in public. I don't include the "sent from my iPhone" in emails. I personally think that people who do things because it's "cool" rather than personal preference are lame, whether they start smoking to fit in, buy an iPhone to look cool, or bash the iPhone because that's apparently cool too. You're free to have your opinions, but bashing a product and stating your unfounded opinions as "fact" really make you look ignorant. I guess that's why you posted anonymously.

Oh yeah. It's funny that my coworker who recently got a Blackberry says he has to pay extra for Exchange support, and I don't. I can even get on VPN, ssh in, and work from my phone in vi if needed.

    @definition of cool

Good post, I can give up to that.

Mind you, I know *I'm* not very cool (and the wife reminds me every day)... but to me, that is in itself, cool...

    QED??
