The snapped headline reads to me that they are running down their stock of 8gb 3G, to be replaced by the 3GS (of indeterminate size); not that the '8gb' part applies to the '3GS' part.

It might merely be a case of higher quality control set all the way from component manufacturing through to retailing. And, of course, that requires greater skills in order for great of ease at user level.

Well duh . . .

iPhone build costs were lowered from 3G to 3GS, so there's no point in building even an 8G 3G. And what's the point of clogging up production lines with 3G when you can't make enough 32G 3GS's to meet demand?

But distribution via carriers prevents Apple's normal overnight product transition. To allow component and finished 3G inventory to be flushed through the lengthy channel, a 3G model inevitably overlaps with 3GS for a few months. It'll happen again when 3GS is replaced.

No, but I am forced to listen to incessant - almost evangelical - rantings by people who think their iPhone is the greatest thing ever, not to mention hype-inducing coverage in the media (that means you, El Reg).

This would be fine if the product in question was technically any good and didn't just look pretty. "Look, Copy & Paste AND 3G in one device! Amazing!"

If I put a Ferrari body on a Mondeo chassis it'll look awesome ... but it's still a Ford!

What bollocks! Nobody's forcing you to read any iPhone stories on El Reg and you can ignore the choose to ignore the ravings of iPhone owners. See how you not only read this story, but then read the comments and added your own. You just made three choices to get involved with this iPhone story.

Oh sure, before the iPhone every phone manufacturer was building phones with multi-touch, capacitive screens, a completely new phone OS, visual voicemail, built in accelerometers etc. etc. etc. Apple just took one of those multitudes of phones and put a pretty cover on the top, right?

You know, for someone who has all this iPhone information supposedly "forced" upon them you really are quite clueless! Like it or hate it the iPhone has changed the mobile phone industry forever. Next time you use your Palm Pre / HTC Touch / Whatever remember you have Apple to thank for raising the game in the industry.
