According to the Timaru Herald, Muff Road has rarely enjoyed secure signage, and operatives apparently gave up replacing the signs after the last set went AWOL around 18 …

    Where do you start

The use of 'muff-hungry' is pure genius it's a shame there was no angle for getting the phrase 'all you can eat muff buffet', enough of my dreams though.

Mine's the one with the tooth pick in the pocket

Think off the people in Co. Donegal who live in the town called Muff! What delivery service is going to believe that you live in Muff?

    A common name in Ireland

There are at least half a dozen villages/hamlets called Muff. There's one on lough Foyle, Donegal, with it's own scuba diving club -

    Paris, 'cos she visits frequently.

    Got another one...

Mary Jane Lane. County tried extra tall sign poles, special bolts, they even greased the poles - no good. The idea that dopers are lazy just didn't apply in this case. The county really wanted the residents to change the name.

    Another missed opportunity.

Fix the real road sign so securely that no one can sensibly swipe it, then sell lower quality ones at profit to all those who want one.

    The meaning of Muff

I have heard of several origins for the word "muff" but it was only when I moved to France that I discovered it is from the French word, "Meuf", which means woman. In French there is a commonly used slang/street-talk called Verlan which simply inverts the word. In this slang "Femme" becomes "Meuf". So in French it is not vulgar to call one's girlfriend, "ma meuf".
