Slow news day?
Nokia’s flagship handset, the N97, will finally be available to buy in Blighty later this month. Nokia_N97_03 Nokia's N97: will it live up to the hype? The phone, which features a 3.5in display, 5Mp camera and 3.6Mb/s HSDPA 3G, cropped up for pre-order on the websites of various online retailers following Nokia’s recent …
A poor entry into a market that has moved on significantly. What a great phone the N95 was when it came out, but it can't compete now in a world with iPhone sophistication. With iPhone's 3.0 imminent release they will be really lagging behind, and will no longer be able to sit on their laurels claiming superiority on features to make up for the lack of a modern user interface and input efficiency - where's the fast, slick capacitive touch screen model??
I don't much care for the "slick touchscreens" etc... I do want a good keypad/keyboard and long autonomy though. Preferably with some other features. Frankly I'm hoping the n900 if nothing else will last 3-5 days on battery in power safe with 3g on.(hey I can dream can't I)
.. a mobile phone should just be a phone, with SMS if you're lucky.
Take the Motorola F3 for example. It's slim and stylish but it's just designed to be a phone. OK so it has vibrate alert and polyphonic ringtones but it's no frills. And thanks to it's e-ink based screen the battery life is huge.
Best thing of all? £25 from major retailers or about £10 on eBay. Damage it? No worries, just get another.
Had Nokia communicators for 10 years. The 9110, 9300. Then I got the E90 - POS. The hardware is fine; 2G, 3G, BT, WiFi nice screen, full keyboard, but the firmware - pah!
Nokias used to everything possible, and more than all the others, now they don't even do what they used to 10 years ago, let alone what the others are doing. Nokia's response is "buy loads of dodgy software from 3rd parties" but they don't integrate properly and may not work. It looks like the N97 is going down the same path.

I've always been happy that the laptop in my pocket can also access the internet and make calls without having to carry something else around. You can feel free to carry around your phone and a laptop though.
