This has been going on for quite some time; since before the Warrior2000 concept program that envisioned injected pellets (yes, like the chips they put in dogs) in the neck's of soldiers to record and transmit location, medical status, etc.
Likewise, there is the multi-nano networks where each indiv node was supposed to be closer to $5.00 than $500.00... Designed to be dropped by air or air-burst rocket over 1 km^2 area on the order of about 1000 of the ankle biters.
So this, instead, uses every existing member of the network as a retransmission node within the network... which will work great until the nodes move out of range of each other... :(
The only way to overcome this would be to have *really* cheap "supplemental" nodes that could be dropped, dispersed, deployed, whatever over the area (ala airburst) or like a trail of breadcrumbs.
