back to article Sony Rolly dancing MP3 player

The silence at the end of the phone was unusually ominous. “We've got something for you,” said the voice from Vulture Central. “Great - what is it?” Silence, then: “Just open the box when it arrives...” Twenty-four hours later and a small black 300g rugby ball shaped dancing MP3 player is sitting on our desk: Sony Rolly …

    AC Adaptor

Just to correct the reviewer, the AC adaptor is to be made available to buy from your local Sony Centre very shortly.

    Most pointless thing ever.

Maybe you'd lay out twenty quid for a bit of silliness like this, but for the cost you could get an Xbox360, or an Ipod Touch, or something equally cool.

If ever there was an opportunity for a video clip in the article, this is it.

While I wouldn't actually want one

This does make me curious about how people might interact with this. I know at dance parties, often times no one wants to break the ice and be the first couple out on the floor. I can't help but wonder if you rolled this little guy out there first, if it wouldn't be successful in getting the ball rolling... Certainly a conversation piece if nothing else.

    eh?

This makes about as much sense to me as having a wooden spoon with build in air conditioning.

Paris....even she makes more sense than the Rolly.

    Now we know..

where the profit for the ridiculous premium we pay for Blu Ray devices is going.

too bad it's not something useful.

But I can see plenty of the iPhone crowd buying them, and sharing "dance routines" online, and stupid youtube vids coming.

    Miserable buggers, aren't you?

Did someone feed your Aibos own-brand batteries or something? Yes, it's pointless, but so what? It looks like ridiculous fun, and it's hardly going to cause people to become mass murderers or rapists, is it?

I want one. And I shall feed it drill'n'bass. Oh yes.

    I have one

Got it a few weeks ago, and honestly it's rather nice. Do I regret the price of it? A little. Would I buy it again if I could go back and think it over? Yes. I like it, the wife likes it, it's fun to muck about with.

    Well...

I know its a total waste of money, but having seen some videos of this in action there is a very immature part of me that really, really wants one of these. In fact, its very pointlessness is key to its appeal. Put on a screen and some buttons and it loses the simple fun that I like about it.

    I saw this...

in Japan over a year ago. I remember being struck by how much could have been achieved if the same amount of R&D had been applied to a more worthy goal.

It was pointless then and is pointless now.

"Playing with the Rolly is a bit like induling in a quick spot of hand-relief when you should be working."

so it *is* for tossers then. thought so.

It's a finite improbability machine - they only people who don't like it and think it's a debasement of science are the people who don't get invited to "those kinds of parties"

    Eeek!

Why does its shape remind me of some kind of sex-toy?

Paris - because she'd know where to stuff it, even if Sony don't.

I'll wait for them to bundle a combination satellite subwoofer and pointing device with it (a.k.a. the mouse that roars!) :-D

    North America not target market

I expect Sony will sell tonnes and tonnes of these in Japan, probably also South Korea and urban China. It ought to be an absolute smash with the teenage girl set in those markets - because it is just so damned cute, not for the prurient reasons bruited above.

So what kind of moves does it perform if you pipe a porn soundtrack through it? Yeowch - I wouldn't think those flapping ears are trouser-friendly.

Otherwise it seems a pointless waste of money for all but the wealthy.

Is it just me or do David Cameron and George Osborne collectively seem to have

...all the conscience and economic nous, not to mention common touch, of an AIBO? I really can't picture anyone wanting to vote for them, who is either over the age of, say, 33, or who hasn't been in a coma for the last two or three decades.

    FANTASTIC TECH!!!

OK, it's pointless in my age bracket (40+), but THIS is just a great piece of thinking or at least creating. It needs to be viewed more as a piece of tech art than a useful device, and as THAT it is blooming successful. It's got a nice piece of industrial design, cool aesthetics, let's the user actually create with it inteteractively, and is fun at parties.

If you can't see the value in that, then as someone observed above, you probably don't get invited to those sorts of parties, probably because you are so literal and dull that your company is not that interesting.

As for the price, most art costs a LOT more than the tubes of oil paints and the canvass...why should this be different?

I will never buy one, but I am glad they exist, just to show that cool technology can be used for something other than powering autonomous, unmanned carrier-based bombers...
