"hopefully it’ll be extend to Blighty soon."
You HAVE to be fucking joking, right?
I'm going to be sending El Reg the clean-up bill for my work area, which, after seeing *that* picture, is now covered in vomit.
Almost everyone owns an iPhone 3G now, or so it seems sometimes. So if you want to stand out from the Apple crowd, but aren’t willing to give up the phone, why not have your handset custom hued? iphone_3g_colorware ColorWare can colour the phone's back, frame, button and SIM tray individually Gadget painting specialist …
How come companies aren't doing the same trick the PSP has had for years?
For that console, you can just get plastic back or front casing replacements molded in all sorts of colours, patterns, some silvery and some transparent even.
I'm sure it would be more economical to create a reuseable plastic iPhone mold instead of going to the trouble of recolouring and re-finishing the existing plastic bits.
With the added advantage then of not spoiling the casing fit by adding paint and a finish (microscopically yes, but possibly enough to throw out the tolerances and prevent you from putting it back together easily).
Your typical PSP case replacement can go for as little as £30 or less, not fitted. The PSP case is more complicated than your typical plastic 3G iPhone backside, but the fit can sometimes be a little out.
.
I agree with the previous comments though, who in their right mind would go for a cyan coloured backing with a red home-button?
'Yuck' doesn't quite do it justice. Just what the hell is wrong with that beautiful black casing it comes with? Some people...
... I remember years ago that POS (Pinnock Organiser Services) in Streatham used to offer a similar service ... I still have a Psion 5 in a sparkly blue colour (helped to make mine much easier to select out of the pile on the table in the pub!)
Of course the next thing will be a company that allows you to upload your own JPEG/GIF and will run you off a new casing (the way they have for Nokia phones for many years now).
And yes, I can easily understand why someone would want to colour their iPhone, it's because they've broken their gold (coloured!) Dolce & Gabbana Motorola Razr :-)

... if you buy an OpenMoko phone, the guys have open sourced the CAD design for the case, so anybody can make a case - or indeed make a completely different case and move the eletronics over.
Now that the 3G iphone has screws to open it up it can only be a matter of time before somebody offers a swap-by-mail service.
