I never did see the whole thrill of the ".NET" maybe because I'm not a "real" programmer, just dabble in php, mysql and other web based stuff.

Closed to contributions doesn't mean closed source.

There are many open source projects that don't accept external contributions. Just because the source is provided and you are allowed to make changes doesn't mean that they have to use your changes. It would be helpful to know whether the DLR will continue to be licensed with the Ms-PL.
