Indeed, the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7401260.stm">piece</a> at Auntie adds some nice background saga to the story. El Reg keeps to accusing the Estonians of cashing in on the crisis, and pointing out that the World has this sort of thing on it's agenda anyway, what with global cyber security conferences and the like.. Interesting.

Now that's a scoop. At least the animals would have carefree surfing. Humans don't seem to matter as much to this governent as their telex-room meetings.

Is it just me

Or does the idea of not being able to run WoW for a few days not fill the rest of you with terror either?

So far these attacks seem limited to script kiddies taking down websites no one even visits. The idea that the world will end because a government website is out of service for a couple days seems like a bit of an overreaction.

You can't turn off a nation's electricity, poison it's water supply or blow up gas pipelines with a website. You can't blow up GPS satellites with a worm, shit even Sky TV will survive such a horrendous assault on freedom and democracy.

So what exactly is the problem here besides a few red faces and some extremely boring website going offline?

If governments want to concentrate on something internet related, it ought to be something along the lines of forcing those that keep financial and personal records on internet accessible computers to be financially responsible to everyone effected by their incompetence.

at the bean feest in Malaysia, with that number of participants the first question will be whether they are for or against cyber-terrorism leading to the second "what is it", some participants will doubtless regard a less than adulatory ditty about their beloved leader as terrorism.

I don't know Andy how are things where you live. But in Estonia most people deal with banks trough internet get most of their daily news trough news sites and deal with government officials and institutions trough internet. That's our way of life no standing in lines no waiting no unwilling or ignorant officials. I stress again it's our way of life.

Now it there are riots on the streets people need information (just to know that all is ok). So the websites are under increased pressure from nonmalignant users, but the news sites don't load as there is massive DoS attack going on. You can't do bank transactions, you can't deal with government. To me that threatens our way of life.

and that's what NATO is for to keep the way we live. You are entitled to your opinion and I can't hold it against you that that's not your way of life. But the fact remains that for Estonians it is and it was threatened.
