What about Hoth?
"....and I thought they smelled bad on the outside!" Han Solo
It's Friday, so what better way to waste a bit of the firm's time before beer o'clock than by participating in our fun-for-all-the-family top sci-fi movie quote poll? Our 42* prime cuts were lovingly selected by various members of Register staff, and are presented in no particular order for your reading pleasure. Please note …
At last, a really worthwhile activity for a Friday ... with added confirmation that El Reg staff have good [sci-fi] taste!
the toughest call was definitely between Bladerunner and Dark Star, but Bladerunner edged it. Most importantly though, I must have used up a good 10 minutes chortling over the sheer cheekiness of script writers over the decades. Absolutely beat hands down watching emails dropping into my In Box (and doing nothing about them).
Nice one guys :-)
Just kidding, but here it is anyway:
"You came in that? Your braver than I thought!"
(Princess Leia - Star Wars)
Add entire comments section full of other quotes below.....
Mines the long cape with a hood. Thats not the coat your looking for...
Ahem.
"Vote now for your fave sci-fi *movie* quote"
"Please note that since our word is final on the available choices, there's absolutely no point in protesting along the lines of "I can't believe you haven't got [insert quote] from [insert film], jeez you guys suck", etc, etc."
Specsavers have some great deals on at the moment, folks.
if we are going to want a Time Bandits quote then surely it should be...
"God isn't interested in technology. He cares nothing for the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time, forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men!"
however, for that ultimate sci-fi quote you cannot go wrong with Split Second
Dick Durkin: We need to get bigger guns. BIG F*CKING GUNS!
Dick Durkin: I don't think this thing thinks it's Satan, I think this thing IS Satan.
Stone: Well Satan is in deep shit.
Well, they had Corbin's 'Meat Popsicle' quote in the list but that movie has loads of classic lines.
Strange Days has a ton of them too..
"Bullet-resistant? What ever happened to bullet-proof?"
"This tie cost more than your entire wardrobe... it's the one thing that stands between me and the jungle"
"This is what we laughingly refer to as a plan, right?"
"His ass is so tight, when he farts only dogs can hear it."
"Right now his frontal lobes are like two runny eggs."
..and that's just from Lenny.
Helmet: "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former room-mate."
Lone Starr "What's that make us?"
Helmet: "Absolutely nothing!"
From Spaceballs: The Movie
And:
"Violence is the ultimate authority, from which all other authorities are derived."
From Starship Troopers.
Is it wrong that I have that last quote memorised?
Paris because most of the time she's on another planet.
...to vote for one of the Aliens quotes, but Roy Batty's speech is just fantastic.
But Aliens is a damn quotable movie - here's a couple more of my faves:
Hudson "Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?"
Vasquez "No. Have you?"
Hicks (produces shotgun) "I like to keep this handy. For close encounters..."
... i voted for blade runner...
my fave dark star/bomb quote is later, when they're discussing the philosophy...
i liked it so much i used it in a rather nice [if i do say so myself] psy-trance track:
http://www.ingie.com/media/music/demo/light-sheep.mp3
/plug :)
[ if you want to just hear the quote it's at the very beginning, so you don't have to suffer the whole track ]
I think we need a gold star icon, because this is the best article ever[1].
What about:
"You're hit man. I ain't got time to bleed. Oh ok then, *ptang* *ptang* have you got time to duck? *BOOM*" (Predator)
"There's a lot of slack jawed faggots round here. This stuff'll make you a sexual tyrannosaurus.. just like me" (Predator)
I tip my cap to the film industry in some part, after all, when they get it right, with some of the films quoted in the above list, they certainly get it *right*.
[1] It must be friday if I'm making outrageous claims like that.
"Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received." - Lorien
"On your trip back I would like you to take the time to learn the Babylon 5 mantra.
Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova is god. And if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out." - Ivanova
"Understanding is a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth." - Kosh Naranek
what about: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy."
or from star trek generations: "live is the fire in which we burn"
or the best line in star trek history, from 5: Kirk: "excuse me....excuse me......What does God need with a starship?"
"Oh. I'm sad now. I just voted, and then found out that only one other person went for Emmet Brown"
Well, that's funny, because I voted for that 30 minutes after you and there were still only 2 votes for it - so there's either some crazy flux-capacitor related shenanigans going on or someone's fiddling the figures (or you could work with me, in which case we shall be having words about 'conan'...) ...
It could also potentially be due to the overwhelming number of votes cast for this quote and the system just can't handle it. I for one know that I'll be voting again from home after work and I'll also be dusting off the old DMC-12 for a bit of vote rigging. In fact, I should have already done that, so why the hell are there still only 2 votes?????
Paris cos even she can count past 2!
Could we have counted Moonraker? In which case it would be "I'm going to put you out of my misery Mr. Bond".
Which leads me on to another piece of trivia: The film Ronin contained three actors who had been or would become bond bad guys.
Well, I'm now ready for the weekend, thanks!
"Leave them to me, I shall deal with them myself"
or
"your hate has made you powerful"
or
"everything is proceeding as i have forseen"
or
"I am looking forward to completing your training, in time you will call me, Master."
or the all time greatest quote:
"everything that has transpired has done so according to MY DESIGN."
I try to use one of these daily in the course of my work. It feels soooo good, try it.
Shame to see that doing so well when the bit about all the components being made by the lowest bidder is more usually attributed to John Glenn. Some sources reckon that the "lowest bidder" quote was originally thought up by someone interviewing Glenn. Either way, he (re)used it many times starting in the '60s and even managed to slot it into his political retirement speech in '97.
But we've already had the discussion about Hollywood and originality recently, haven't we.
I swear the delivery of the "Time to die" monologue was the making of Rutger Hauers career. Only time I ever felt sad at seeing the "bad guy" die. He completely stole that movie from under Harrison Fords nose.
Then, IMHO, he never delivered on his promise in later movies. Yeah, Blind Fury was a hoot but none of his later parts had the intensity and "punch" of Roy.
20% @ 14:30,.. cool!
If you're counting Moonraker, I'd take: "James Bond. You appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season."
I voted for the "Blade Runner" quote, but I'm with the people who said 'where's Douglas Adams?' My favourite is probably the whole scene that ends with the 'on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware Of The Leopard'.
Alan.
Went for "I know kung fu". Because I think it's a great moment of transition - the bit when Mr Anderson the loser office jockey becomes Neo the bullet-dodging ass-kicker.
Personally I think Equilbirum should have had at least one entry:
"No. Not without incident."
"Without love, without anger, without sorrow, breath is a just a clock - ticking."
"Wait, Wait, look at me, look at me, I'm life, I live I, I breathe, I feel, now that you know it can you really take it? Is it really worth the price?" "I pay it gladly."
And my own preferred quote from the original Metropolis would be (paraphrased from memory, but it's a translation anyway):
Joh Fredersen: "Where is my son?!"
The Thin Man: "Tomorrow, Joh Fredersen, thousands will be asking the same question."
ST: First Contact - The Borg - "Resistance Is Futile"
Serenity - Mal Reynolds - "This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then - explode."
Star Wars II: AotC - Senator Amidala - "So this is how democracy ends, in thunderous applause..."
even if I'm firmly a Star Wars geek. BR -is- science fiction, after all. SW is... something else.
Besides! What about: "I am your father!" in ESB ? That started off a whole (far away) galaxy of south american soapopera plots..
And who many times have you got in someplace thinking there could'nt be "a more wretched hive of scum and vilany"?
There were four or five Babylon 5 TV movies.
"In The Beginning" was easily the best and filled in a lot of valuable back-story.
Two speeches stand out; Londo's "They were magnificent" speech and The President's "Hold the line against the night" speech both make my hair stand on end. Not very quotable, though.
In general I wasn't a fan of Event Horizon. Sam Neill does not a crazed satanic avatar make. But he had one good quote; imagine a deranged, satanic Sam Neill - having just plucked out his eyes - turning to our heroes, smiling broadly, and saying "Eyes? Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see".
Also reminds me of the one good line from Sphere - the one good moment - where a clearly deranged and potentially very dangerous Samuel L Jackson says to Dustin Hoffman "you aren't scared of dying, are you?" with a big smile on his face. It works in the film.
...because its all profound (and not a little nerdy), but my real favourite is:
Howard Marner: "What if it goes out and melts down a bus load of nuns? How would you like to write the headline on that one?"
Benjamin Jabituya: "Nun soup?"
Short Circuit. Shit film but full of great quotes/
"I also like: "What the hell are we supposed to use man, harsh language?", but I don't think that was Hudson"
You'd be right, that was Frost, shortly before being introduced to the business end of a flamethrower.
Personally I think this is sorely missing some quotes from the Abyss:
Virgil: God, I hate that bitch.
Hippy: Probably shouldn't have married her then, huh?
Lindsey Brigman: So raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water-tentacle.
Hippy: The guy's crazier than a shit-house rat!
Hippy: I give this whole thing a Sphincter Rating of about nine-point-five!
In saying that though, I had to go for Blade Runner, especially after watching the final cut a couple of weeks back.
"The architecture is Early Maniac" - Vila Restall ( Blake's 7 ), on seeing the citadel they were being herded towards on a prison planet.
or of course:
"I woke up this morning and thought I'd have a relaxed day, do a bit of reading, brush the dog. It's now just after 4 o'clock in the afternoon and already I'm being thrown out of an ALIEN SPACESHIP five light years from the smoking remains of the earth!!" - which no-one should admit to not knowing the source of.
Or..
"No, just *a* Zaphod Beeblebrox, don't you know I come in six-packs?"
Or...
"'Late' as in, 'The late DentArthurDent'"
Too many lines, too little space...
Inexcuseable to miss this;
Dr. Weir: [describing how the Event Horizon functions] The ship doesn't really go faster than light; what it does is it creates a dimensional gateway that allows it to jump instantaneously from one point of the universe to another light years away.
Lt. Starck, Executive Officer: How?
Dr. Weir: [stammering] Well, that's - that's difficult to - it's all math...
Miller: Try us, Doctor.
Dr. Weir: Right. Well, um, using layman's terms... Use a retaining magnetic field to focus a narrow beam of gravitons - these, in turn, fold space-time consistent with Weyl tensor dynamics until the space-time curvature becomes infinitely large, and you produce a singularity. Now, the singularity...
Miller: [interrupting] "Layman's terms"?
Cooper: Well, fu*ck layman's terms! Do you speak English?
Some people may disqualify the one, but it is fiction with science...
"That's a wonderful story, Bodie. I noticed you've stopped stuttering."
"I've been giving myself shock treatments."
"Up the voltage."
"Self-realization. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, 'I drank what?' "
"Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis?"
"Not right now."
"A girl's gotta have her standards."
But next time how about letting people submit a pre-quiz round up of the best candidate quotes, the best 42 of which go into the main quiz??? It'll be a bit more comprehensive. But I suppose this is only a piss-around, pre-pissup quiz.
.
Anyhoo, how could anybody have NOT voted for the Roy quote from Blade Runner??? A moment of utter movie perfection.
A close second tho would have been "One express elevator to hell. Going down!" followed by the best space ship re-entry scene ever. "WOOOOOOOO!".
But it weren't there. *Thumbs down*
From the good star wars films
"You have failed me for the last time, Admiral!"
"We can't possibly repel firepower of that magnitude"
Both of which I use frequently
And if we're having Firefly it's gotta be
"If your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you. "
and if you've never seen Firefly, shame on you, buy it now and share the joy :)
Actually, just to be a pedant, that quote is usually attributed to Alan Shepard, sitting atop Freedom 7 shortly before becoming the first American in space.
"According to Gene Kranz in his book Failure Is Not an Option:
When reporters asked Shepard what he thought about as he sat atop the Redstone rocket, waiting for liftoff, he had replied, 'The fact that every part of this ship was built by the low bidder.'"
Shepard is also responsible for what's now known as Shepard's Prayer: "Please, dear God, don't let me fuck up."
Anyway, I went for the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers quote, because it's the truth.
OK I know it was just a sci-fi vehicle for Woody Allen jokes, but
"I'm what you would call a teleological, existential atheist. I believe that there's an intelligence to the universe, with the exception of certain parts of New Jersey."
"Perform sex? Uh, uh, I don't think I'm up to a performance, but I'll rehearse with you, if you like"
"I don't know what the hell I'm doing here. I'm 237 years old, I should be collecting social security."
"Luna Schlosser: What's it feel like to be dead for 200 years?
Miles Monroe: Like spending a weekend in Beverly Hills. "
As well as being in the THIRD Evil Dead movie..
It's also spoken by characters in 'Chopping Mall', 'Men In Black' and 'Toys'.
The movie 'The Manhatten Project' has that scene and quote playing on TV.
It's written on a poster in an office in both Close Encounters and Tron.
Klaatu, Barada & Nikto are three of the aliens on Jabba's sail barge in R.O.T.J
And that's just the movie references, don't get me started on TV, computer game and book references to it :-)
mmm predator 2 has got it for me with these 2
just before the pred attacks the voodoo ritual, and they black guy says "shit happens",
And in the grave yard when the little boy says to the cloaked predator "want some candy"
Both sayings are then used by the predator to wind up poor old danny glover

I remember about a year or so ago, listening to a radio interview of Brian Blessed, he was promoting some west end show he was in or something.
It wasn't that interesting, until the interviewer got into a bit of a personal request and asked him to repeat the 'Gordons Alive' quote.
He laughed, and repeated it in a good loud rumble, made my day that did.
So many quotes, so little time, in the end I went with Back to the Future, apparently I'm only the third person to do so, ho hum. Their all pretty good I'd be happy no matter which one won.
(I'd maybe have left off what movie they were from though, just naming the films could have wasted enough of Friday to make it worth while)
Most of the time, these lists are crap - they miss all the good ones and put on obscure personal favorites. Your list was very good - Kudos!
However, in the spirit of things, I have to add a few quotes:
"This...Is my BOOM STICK!" (Ash, Army of Darkness)
and
"Not an easy thing to meet your Maker" (Roy Batty, Blade Runner)
Ash - Army of Darkness
- Its a trick; get an axe.
- This is my BOOM! stick.
- Clatu! Verata! Negemmem...
- Name's Ash... house-wares.
- Lady I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the store.
Bill and Teds Excelent Adventure
- Iron Maiden? Excelelnt!
- You killed Ted you midevil dickweed!
- Sounds good Mr. The Kid
Ghost Busters
- Yes its true, this man has no dick.
So, you're missing just a few classic titles!
Forbidden Planet is THE classic. But there are more:
The Thing with James Arness.
The Crawling Eye
The Beast from 20,000 fathoms (no fathoming that title, tho)
IT Came from Outer Space
More?
You really DO need to _survey_ readers to develop a list!!!
seriously did you think you would get away without people saying what about!?
They're all poor pooor choices.
What about
"Game Over Man Game Over!" Aliens
"When this baby hits 88mph your going to see some serious shit" BTF
"Get your ass to mars" Total Recall
"What's my boggle?" Demolition Man
"MEEEEEEEEEEEDIC" Starship Troupers
"So thanks for all the fish" - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy
"Maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got out asses kicked, pal!" - Hudson, "Aliens"
"You know, Burke, I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them screwing each other over for a fucking percentage." - Ripley, "Aliens"
"The earth? Oh the earth will be gone in a few seconds...I'm going to blow it up. It's obstructing my view of Venus." - Marvin the Martian
"If it bleeds, we can kill it." - Predator
"I've had people walk out on me before, but not when I was being so charming." - Deckard, "BladeRunner"
"The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long...and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy." - Tyrell, "BladeRunner"
"I take a dim view of watching my own destruction." - Jack, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956)
"Where should we be if nobody tried to find out what lies beyond? Have you never wanted to look beyond the clouds and stars, to know what causes trees to bud and what changes darkness into light? But if you talk like that people call you crazy..." - Henry Frankenstein, "Frankenstein" (1932)
"This is not a democracy. We are a collection of scientists and astronauts." - Captain Kaneda, faced with a difficult decision, "Sunshine"
"I could tell you what's happening, but I don't know if it would really tell you what's happening." - Snow, "Solaris"
"Death shall have no dominion... Though lovers be lost love shall not." - Chris, quoting Dylan Thomas, "Solaris"
"It believes it is human. It wants to live. It knows fear. It will make a mistake — in the genius lies the defect." - Major Hathaway, "The Impostor"
"Algorithms I trust. Boolean logic I trust. Beautiful women... they just mystify me." - Zane Zaminski (Charlie Sheen), "The Arrival
"One more thing. The person who finds her gets to name her right?" "Yes, yes that's right, that's right." "I wanna name her Dottie after my wife. She's a vicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape." - Karl and Dan, "Armageddon"
"redruM! redruM!" - Danny, "The Shining"
"Sunlight poses a problem to our 'ethnic group'." - Gremlin, in "Gremlins II"
"There's that word again, 'heavy'. Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?" - Dr Emmet Brown, "Back To The Future"
"The issue isn't whether you're paranoid, It's whether you're paranoid enough." - Strange Days
"I guess it wasn't the dove." - Natalie Portman, "Mars Attacks"
"Why do we never meet anyone nice?" "Why is it we never meet anyone who can shoot straight?" - Lister & Cat, "Red Dwarf"
"Step up to red alert." "Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb." - Rimmer & Kryten, "Red Dwarf"
"How can you put your faith in a man whose idea of a romantic nightspot and an impregnable fortress are the same thing? This is a pub!" - David, to Liz, "Shaun of the Dead"
"Not something I ever expected to say on air... 'removing the head or destroying the brain'." - Jeremy Thompson, Sky News Anchor on Z-Day, "Shaun of the Dead"
"A girl can only be a slut, bitch, tease, or the virgin next door." - Ginger, "Ginger Snaps"
"64% of prom dates end in sex." "You just made that up!" - June, trying to scare Freya straight, "Thoughtcrimes"
Being a simple, old-fashioned fellow, I like my vampires staked through the heart and my werewolves bludgeoned to death with silver-handled walking sticks. So, I had a tough time processing "Underworld", in which vampires wielding automatic weapons do Matrix-style slow-motion somersaults while firing silver-nitrate bullets into werewolves, who ricochet off the walls while shooting back with irradiated "daylight" projectiles. Some of the werewolves (or, as they're known here, "Lycans") are able to squeeze the bullets out of their smoking bodies in mid-transformation, while others simply keel over and rot... Literalist that I am, I kept wanting to scream: "!?!WHAT ARE THE BLOODY RULES!?!" - David Edelstein, bothered and bewildered reviewing "Underworld" for "MSN Slate"
"What happens if they board us?" "If they take the ship they will rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins in to their clothing, and if we're very, very lucky, they’ll do it in that order." - Simon and Zoe, "Firefly"
"You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in ruttin' command here." - Jayne, "Firefly"
"I would like to thank you all for helping us to make sense of this world, and when it didn't make sense, for teaching us to lie back and enjoy it. For showing us what was true, real and beautiful about this world." - Dick's farewell speech, "Third Rock from the Sun"
"There's my nipple." "We orginally wanted to show both your nipples, but we want to show that we had a bit of class." - Milla Jovovich and Paul Anderson, "Resident Evil" DVD Audio Commentary
"He who controls the Spice, controls the universe!" aside, Kenneth MacMillan's "I won't tell you who the traitor is, or when we'll attack. However, the Duke will die before these eyes and he'll know, he'll know, that it is I, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who encompasses his doom!" truly epitomises world class scenery-chewing!
So good I made it my incoming SMS tone!
Darth Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing
DV : Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
Han Solo: Laff it up fuzzball
HS :Had a slight weapons malfunction, but everything's perfectly alright now. We're fine, we're all fine, here, now, thank you. How are you?
If The Rock can be included (well there is some science and fiction in it ;p), then you can have some greats from Nicholas Cage:
NC: how in the name of ZEUS' butthole did you get out of your cell?
NC: I just wanna get some rockets!
NC: Whaddya say we cut the chit-chat A-HOLE!
(It's in the delivery of course)
Went for Bladerunner 'cos Rutger made that up himself
you havent mentioned any of the lines from Alien - maybe not as quotable as the second, but still worthy -
'We aint out of in here in ten minutes, we wont need no rocket to fly through space!'
'We'll move in pairs. We'll go step by step and cut off every bulkhead and every vent until we have it cornered. And then we'll blow it the fuck out into space. Is that acceptable to you?'
'There is an explanation for this, you know.'
'I think it's safe to assume it isn't a zombie.'
'I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience...remorse...or delusions of morality.'
*IF* you can include Moonraker *then* you might include Goldeneye (it's got satellites in it..)
in which case one of my favourite quotes to use when i actually get something right is the one from Boris the hacker:
"Yess! I am inveencible!" said in the appropriate dodgy accent with both arms in the air. Makes people in the office look round, i can tell you.
and you did include the best one from the whole film. It was just a pity that in the original it was then ruined by that terrible voice-over: "I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life, anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die". Thank goodness for the Director's Cut(s) !
While we're at it, some more from Wrath of Khan
Khan : From Hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee.
and one from Kirk;
Kirk : How we deal with death, is at least as important as how we deal with life, wouldn't you say?
Oh, and Aliens has more best quotes per second of file than just about anything else. Gotta say though, by favorite is the line from Split Second about needing guns, really big guns, big f---ing guns. F---ing big guns....etc.
Anyway, I'm taking something from Aliens...
someone out there has actually watched "Split Second", while most people I talk to think about some TV show or haven't heard about that movie at all. Similar thing with Event Horizon... hm... quote?
"Liberate tu-tamek Ex Inferis" (mental note: do NOT go to the ship transmitting that message!)
I suddenly realized that most of those 42 lines are familiar with me, excepto for some old movies like Forbidden Planet, Flash Gordon and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Most of the rest I have seen... and theoretically, H2G2 could have entered the poll, but as some other people mentioned, the movie wasn't exactly great. (Though it wasn't that bad, either...)
The quote in Total Recall:
"Consider that a divorce.". I had just gone through one and wanted to duplicate the whole scene. Tempting, very tempting!!
The kid in all of wants:
"Where's the Kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering Kaboom!"
(need to duplicate in a nasal [Mel Blanc] voice).
There are so many memorable lines from Star Wars, but this has always been one of my favorites.
Moff Tarkin in a moment of sadly misplaced bravado : "Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances."
Surely one of the most iconic lines has to be an unspoken one, Darth Vader, breathing in and then out. Just once is all it takes, but that has to be one of the best 'lines'.
Then when Han Solo is hanging upside down from a hover ship, being held by Chewy. He's just recovering from carbonite hibernation and is blind, and he's trying to shoot a tentacle that is pulling Lando towards certain snack food status. Lando has a line that goes something like "I thought you were blind!" IIRC Han says "trust me".
I always liked Tim Russ's one line from Spaceballs too. He's one of the henchmen literally combing the desert (with giant combs) for our intrepid heroes. He's asked if he's found anything yet. The answer? "We ain't found shit!" Pity is this is one of the funniest moments and is one of the ones *always* cut when they show the flick on TV.
Paris, because well...you know...the fact there there are close encounters of the third kind sort of implies that there may also be close encounters of the first and second kind, and that can't be a bad thing, can it?
"Who am I? I am Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sophie
Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is going to
kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth. I am Death incarnate, and
the last living thing that you are ever going to see. God sent me". - Ivanova
Or maybe it should be a soliloquy..
(can't be bothered to find a movie script, so I'll just copy & paste from the book):
"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. [...] Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. "
If you can't guess the title to this book/film/etc, you don't deserve to call yourself a sci-fi fan!
You know every day I feel like life mimicks that film a bit more.
The major difference is that now being a mature student at Catford University of Don't Throw Them Out Because It Reduces Our Income And Still Costs The Same - I'm surrounded by a lot more utter fucktards than surround Sam Lowry in that film. People who say you shouldn't beat children should be made to spend a few months in the same class of them.
It's not just the students either. The admin department seems to be run by people who are too braindead and give less of a shit about the 'customer' that could even be tolerated by the local council.

How could I forget this little-known classic favourite of mine, with the 'Bill & Ted' actors Alex Winters, Keanu Reeves as Ortiz the Dog Boy (uncredited), one of Randy Quaid's best performances ever and Mr. T as a bearded lady (seriously!). It has such lines as:
"You trust your lives to a guy just because he can lick his own balls?"
"You're ugly enough to burn the nose hairs off a dead nun"
"I just laid a turd that's the spitting image of Kim Basinger!"
First: I was torn between Blade Runner and "My God, it's full of stars." Both are acts of poetry. Ultamitly I chose the latter because it seems to come to mind at odd times for no reason what so ever.
Second: I am glad to see there is at least one other Tremors fan reading these pages. I choose the quote from Tremors 3 "... we should name them. ... Blast Offers or Butt Launchers, oh oh Ass Blasters. Hows that?" Then the Rugged hero -- "Sounds like a porno film."
Bert Gummer is almost as quotable as Hudson.
P.S. Fantastic article for so simplistically drawing out of us the nerd deep with in, the sleeper must awaken!
Can't remember a decent film version but both the Orson Welles radio version and the musical with Richard Burton's narration would be on my list at the expense of some of the more recent blockbusters. The parodies which have some of the best lines should have their own list then I could vote for both Bladerunner and Dark Star!
I love you all
'course, it don't mean we're engaged nor nuthin'
"All talk of cause and effect is secular history.
Secular history is a diversionary tactic."
Gravity's Rainbow - the movie that can exist only in my mind
"By god before I give an inch the whole f)(*&^n' s!"t house goes up in chunks"
Nova Express - the first real CGI art-house movie in-waiting: Lynch, Burton, someone new? Moi?
"Your proposal is acceptable" - MIB
Some sources reckon that the "lowest bidder" quote was originally thought up by someone interviewing Glenn.
Wrong, young person. It was Bill Dana, in character as Jose Jimenez the Astronaut on the Ed Sullivan show in '61 or '62. Watch "The Right Stuff" again. Scott Glenn does it.
My vote was for Dave "It's full of stars...". It is repeated many times in the 2010 film and establishes the required hallucinatory mood for Dave's appearance as a 400 year old something.
RE: "Please note that since our word is final on the available choices, there's absolutely no point in protesting along the lines of "I can't believe you haven't got [insert quote] from [insert film], jeez you guys suck", etc, etc."
Here's 10 good ones. Next time, please ask us first, THEN choose 42 of them. :)
(1) Tron:
Dillinger: "Now, wait a minute, I wrote you!"
MCP: "I've gotten 2,416 times smarter since then."
(2) Star Wars: Episode 3:
Palpatine: "POWER! UNLIMITED POWER!!!" (as Mace goes out the window)
(3) Time Bandits (both tied for most worthy):
3A) Evil: "I'm sorry, Benson, but I'm going to have to turn you into a dog for a while."
3B) Kevin: "NO! Don't touch it!" (parents touch it...explosion occurs)
(4) Heavy Metal:
Hanover Fist's lines in the Captain Stern sequence when he transforms. :)
(5) Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan:
Scotty: "He's dead already."
(6) Star Wars: Episode 4:
Darth Vader: "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
(7) The Matrix:
Agent Smith: "It's the smell."
(8) Star Wars: Episode 5:
Yoda: "Judge me by my size, do you? And where you should not."
(9) The Last Starfighter:
Kodan 1: "We're locked into the moon's gravitational pull! What do we do?"
Kodan 2: (monicle flips into place) "We die."
(10) Last, but not least, any Douglas Adams quote, especially the description for the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. :)
(paraphrase) "...drinking a PGGB is like hitting yourself in the head using a large gold brick with a slice of lemon wrapped around it."
...and now for something completely different...a man with a towel wrapped around his head...
"..we've got sonic, electronic ball-breakers, we've got nukes, we've got knives, sharp sticks..."
"hey Ripley don't worry. Me and my team of ultiate badd asses will protect you"
"go back in there with those things? you can count me out!"
I could go on and on, and would if i didn't want to escape the men with whote coats coming for me....
Most great quotes can be improved by replacing some part with the word "pants."
"I find your lack of pants disturbing."
"You are unwise to lower your pants."
"Chewie and me got into a lot of pants more heavily guarded than this."
"A disturbance in the pants. I have not felt this since near my old master..."
"The pants will be down in moments, sir, you can begin your landing"
"Han'll have those pants down - we've gotta give him more time!"
...and Paris for obvious reasons.
Technically, attributing the "I say we take off and nuke the site from ortbit..." to Ripley is incorrect. Whilst she does say it she is, in turn, quoting Corporal Hicks.
After the inital ass-kicking Hicks says "I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit...".
Burke points out that Hicks is just a damn grunt, no offence (none taken). And only then does Ripley quote Hicks.
My favourite sci-fi quote is "X.... it varies". I use it whenever a bit of code disappears up it's own ass.
Um, you did know it was going to bring this kind of response anyway, right? Everyone has their favorites! (okay, I flipped a coin). But, "I can't believe..."
No, Luke, I am your father (SW TESB)
He's dead, Jim (ST)
Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a (insert profession of choice)! (Pick your ST)
It's not the years, it's the mileage (Raiders of the Lost Ark)
There can be only one (Highlander)
Hello boys, I'm baaack (Independence Day)
Help me (The Fly - the original)
And one of my faves, though I'm not sure it qualifies as sf/f even though sharks do not act this way - I think you need a bigger boat (Jaws)
I managed to narrow my choices down to:
But one thing's sure. Inspector Clay is dead, murdered, and somebody's responsible. (Detective - Plan 9 from Outer Space)
Bomb, this is Lt. Doolittle. You are not to detonate in the bomb bay. I repeat, you are NOT to detonate in the bomb bay! (Dark Star)
I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. (HAL 9000 - 2001: A Space Odyssey)
Sorry, miss. I was giving myself an oil-job. (Robby the Robot - Forbidden Planet)
Roads? Where we're going we don't need... roads. (Emmet Brown - Back to the Future)
Be afraid. Be very afraid. (Ronnie - The Fly)
We came, we saw, we kicked its ass! (Dr. Peter Venkman - Ghostbusters)
Gort! Klaatu barada nikto! (Helen Benson - The Day The Earth Stood Still)
Come quietly or there will be... trouble. (Robocop)
Flash, Flash, I love you! But we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth! (Dale Arden - Flash Gordon)
Negative, I am a meat popsicle. (Korben Dallas - The Fifth Element)
It's alive! (Henry Frankenstein - Frankenstein)
Would've been seriously disappointed if the "It's ALIVE!" quote had not been nominated.
Another 5 minutes to get it down to a tie-breaker between Dale Arden and Korben Dallas. Hmmmm, brilliant non sequitur or excellent "I don't give a fuck" smart-arse reply?
Quite a dilemma!
I can't believe you haven't got "Now a real killer, when he picked up the ZF-1, would've immediately asked about the little red button on the bottom of the gun." (Zorq) from /The Fifth Element/, jeez you guys suck! <evil grin>
Great selection of brilliant quotes, guys. The movies I'm now prompted to watch again exceed the time I have to watch them in a weekend.
"E.T. phone home." - E.T.
"This is Unix. I know this!" - Jurassic Park
"You've got it all wrong, priest. I absolutely believe in God. And I absolutely hate the fucker." - Pitch Black
"Where's the Eludium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator? That creature has stolen the Space Modulator!" - Marvin the Martian
"And I am Mr. Desiato's bodyguard, and I am responsible for his body, and I am not responsible for yours, so take it away before it gets damaged." - HGTTG
"He's going... to kick... our ass!" - My Science Project
"Mr. McKittrick, after very careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that your system sucks." - War Games
Mine's the flexible silver one with the glass-bubble helmet.

from spaceballs...
Scotty beamed me three times last night, it was heaven...
My god , his schwartz is bigger then yours.
President scroob: Why didn;t anyone tell me my a.. was so big ...
Dark helmet : Who are you ?
gunner : I'm an a..hole sir
dark helmet : Who made you a gunner ?
officer : That would be me sir ..
Dark helmet : And who are you ?
Officer Luitenant first class big a..hole sir..
Dark helmet : how many a..holes do we have on this ship ?
( half the crew stands up ) Yo ...
Dark helmet . My god.. we're surrounded by a..holes ....
My name is Barf , I'm a mog , half man half dog. I'm my own best friend...
Please ,please I'm just plain yoghurt.
He did it ( when during a laser saber fight one of the actors kills one of the cameraman )
Raspberry... Only one man uses raspberry to jam the radar...
Prepare for ludicrous speed.
huuuuh. I can;t breathe in this thing. who designed this thing.
And what do we have on this ship ? A Quisinart ?
and the last one and best one ( from the opening scene, sets the right tone for the rest of the film ) We brake for nobody
My favorite is still:
"There's an 82% chance of Intelligent life of the planet"
"Screw Intelligent life, just find me a planet to blow up"
I know I'm a little off the quote there, but you get the drift..
Also, like the pants substitution thing:
"My god its full of pants"
"Why did it have to be full of pants? I hate pants."
"What are you boy, hopped up on pants?"
"Some pants this way comes"
Kevin
and no, I'm not homophobic...
As not to offend any sensibilities...
Dr Hans Zarkov character says when he sees the Amazon Women..
"My god Flash, they're Dykes"
Everytime I hear the deadpan way that is delivered I almost fall off my chair laughing......
The funny part is that it got an "X" rating when it originally came out..now it woudn't even rate an "R"
That was the best quote you could think of from Dune? Jebus.
"Some thoughts have a certain sound, that being the equivalent to a form. Through sound and motion you will be able to paralyze nerves, shatter bones, set fires, suffocate an enemy or burst his organs." Paul Atreides
Also, the line from Dark Star to use would be this one:
"Storage Area Nine self destructed last week and destroyed the ship's entire supply of toilet paper." Doolittle
In protest I have have voted for the wonderful Blade Runner, though I would have preferred Roy's "If only you could see what I've seen with your eyes"
Of bladerunner and Roy batty.
Though I thought it was "sea beams" as that made more sense than C beams. It added the whole concept of an earth empire in space, most people fleeing the world to better places while the replicants waged the wars on the frontier.
Added credibility to the chinese bint in her blimp advertising off world colonies and the film gets another huge step in explaining the plot and the background.
And to know he made it up is even better.
B5 film quote though has to be
"... Do not wake the sleeping dragon, if you do not bother them, they will not bother you..." Londo on explaining about how bad an idea is at going to investigate Minbari space.
...am I the only one that doesn't like douglas adams???
I dunno, there is just something about a tall austrian robot killing machine being litteral that just makes me laugh.
and as for event horizon, there shoulda been one, i mean, c'mon:
"Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see."
and
"Do you see?"
"yes, i see"
(Anyone else bother to freeze frame here and step it to see the images? Man some of those are messed up.)
Does anyone remember this classic Woody Allen film?
*AHEM*
Luna: What's it feel like to be dead for 200 years?
Miles: Like spending a weekend in Beverly Hills.
Luna: It's hard to believe that you haven't had sex for 200 years.
Miles: 204 if you count my marriage.
Miles regarding his robotic dog "scraps": Is he housebroken, or is he going to leave batteries all over the floor?
One could go on....
Voted for Blade Runner, but my real fav is:
"Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720 to 1." C-3PO (to Han Solo)
Incl. non-movie quotes, my favourite sci-fi quote is this one:
"One of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. to summarize: it is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. to summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made president should on no account be allowed to do the job. to summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem."
Who else but Douglas Adams (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe) RIP.
Nothing sci-fi about it other than coming from a sci-fi book, but brilliant nevertheless.
"I find your lack of faith disturbing"--Darth Vader "Star Wars"
"He's a scoundrel--you'd like him"--Han Solo "Empire Strikes Back"
"For your sake I hope so--the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" Darth Vader "Return of the Jedi"
"The reward would be, well, more than you can imagine!" "I don't know, I can imagine a lot" Luke Skywalker and Han Solo "Star Wars"
"Computer...oh computer!" Scotty talking into a mouse in the Star Trek movie with the whales
Perhaps the most momentous and emotionally charged scene in Star Trek movies, Spock's death scene in Engineering after he's saved the ship.
Spock: Don't grieve, Admiral. It is logical. The needs of the many outweigh...
Kirk: ...the needs of the few.
Spock: ...Or the one. I never took the Kobayashi Maru test until now. What do you think of my solution?
Kirk: Spock...
Spock: I have been and always shall be your friend.
[Holds up his hand in the Vulcan salute]
Spock: Live long and prosper.
Paris - because we all want to see her in one of those 60's ultra-micro-mini-dress Trek uniforms.

Ford Prefect: "We'll use the teleporter. It feels a bit like being drunk."
Arthur Dent: "But I quite like being drunk."
Ford Prefect: "Try telling that to a glass of water!"
Question: Are you sure the Dark Star quote is right? That isn't how I remember the argument between the lieutenant and the bomb.
Could use the whole middle section of the movie with the marines
All time favorite :- Marine Drill Sargent Apone
Marines just woken up from hyper sleep or just a bad night on the beer: Apone chews on a big Cigar
Apone: All right, sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the corps! A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I LOVE the corps!
-----------------------------------------
Apone: Allright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill! Assholes and elbows!
-----------------------------------------
Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we talking about this for?
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Hudson: Fuckin' A...
Burke: Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
Ripley: They can *bill* me.
...and none of them is from HHGTTG? You're criminals, that's what you are. Bad though the film might have been, it still contained some of the classics. Clearly there's no excuse for not including:
"Life? Don't talk to me about life."
"Resistance is useless."
or even:
"'Oh dear,' says God, 'I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanished in a puff of logic."

but it got a lot of votes anyway!
I tied between Bladerunner (cause I re-watched it two days ago) and 2001, just because they are both so classic. 2001 just seemed to have more menace, more atmosphere, because of what it portended. But Batty's monologue was a better acted part, so it depends upon if you want to applaud the director or the actor. Given their careers, Kubrick has to beat Hauer as the tie-breaker.
But Rockhound's quote is far funnier, and a few Ripley and Hudson quotes get used far more often!
But - what, no Clockwork Orange quotes to even choose from???
"I've been out, helping people like..." - Alex
I don't know if they actually had it in the Lynch thing...
I must not fear
Fear is the Mind Killer
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass through me and over me
And when the fear has gone past I will turn my inner eye to see its path
Where the fear has gone ther will be nothing
And only I will remain
Ooooh. Shivers.
...and not go for:
"Why don't we raise the shields?"
"Two reasons sir. First, we haven't got any shields and second, we haven't got any shields! I realise that may sound like one reason, but it seemed like such an important one that I thought it was worth mentioning twice."
Ok, TV I know, but I didn't start this....
Not a favourite, or even that good - but *nobody else* has claimed it so far...
"there goes my insurance!" by the Jack Nicholson alien in Spaced Invaders as he gets caught flying past a cop radar trap in his little spaceship. Just about every video I rented for about 5 years had that movie trailer in it, and it kinda stuck (ie when I break something and the tickets start flooding in...)
In the beginning there was nothing , and even that exploded...
I'm from a different planet. Wanna see my spaceship ?
Here i am , brain the size of a planet , and they ask me to go fetch prisoners.
It'll all end in tears.
Number one, i order you to go make a number two. ( Beavis and butthead in the star trek dream episode... )
Fire futon torpedos , blast the retrorockets and make us like .. uh .. go that way ( als B&B )
Elvis isn't dead , he just went home. ( MIB )
My sixt grade teacher must have been from venus or something. Actually she was from jupiter kid. ( MIB )
From Aliens:
"They mostly come at nights... mostly"
"Leave her alone - you bitch!"
From Terminator:
"You're terminated, Fucker!"
"Neeed Inpuuuut" - Number 5 (Is alive!)
"To Infinity - And Beyond!" - Toy Story (Okay, not strictly a SciFi film, but Buzz Lightyear was a spaceman
Stop sign as a reminder to self to stop putting quotes in...
And I cannot believe no-one mentioned "EXTERMINATE. EXTERMINATE!" (The Daleks from Dr Who for anything who has never existed)
"Daisy, daisy give meee yooour answwwer dooooooooo" - 2001
"The pointy birds go pointy pointy, anoint my head, anointy nointy" - The Man With Two Brains (yes, it is SciFi - it's just got comedy too!)
Just because this article deserves 300 comments (currently at 295 at writing.)
And, because of my fond childhood memories and decades of moves; Godzilla deserves an honorable mention in these comments.
Of course I can't think of a single memorable quote -- DRAT.
Of course if I could think of a memorable quote who knows if it was an actual quote or a cheese English translation. -- Double DRAT.
All right. Lets just say Godzilla's roar should be the memorable quote.
(The guy in the icon is getting into his Godzilla suit.)
Next week can we have a poll of the Worst Sci-Fi Quotes? For example:
''The core of the Earth has stopped spinning" from the Core....
Actually, you could just put a transcript of The Core and that could be all of the entries, I felt like I need counselling after that stupid bloody film, two hours of my like wasted that I will never get back.
I should have left at the point that they land the bloody space shuttle in the drainage system in LA, but I was thinking, it cannot get any worse, oh but it did, it excelled itself, it set new heights of stupidity, Unobtainium, oh how I laughed around the aisles of the cinema at that one.....
Rant over, maybe I do need couselling......
Paris, because she was a bright, celebate young woman until she saw that film and it destroyed her life...
And the other thing, Hillary Swank has two oscars, admittedly she only had one before she made the Core, what agent in their right mind suggested that film would be a good move? She should have been disqualified for the Million Dollar Baby Oscar for crimes against cinematography...
End of Rant - for now...
I got the proper quote from Aliens now, the whole thing...
"Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for? Breakfast in bed? Another glorious day in the core. A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm. Every meal's a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade...I LOVE the Corps!"
