back to article Logitech plugs in 'world's smallest' cordless mouse dongle

Peripheral manufacturer Logitech has revealed what it claims is the world's smallest USB transceiver for a cordless input device, a tiny unit that sticks less than a centimeter from the edge of the port it's plugged into. Logitech VX Nano receiver Logitech's Nano receiver: the world's dinkiest dongle? That may prove even …

    Not sinister

Like all Logitech mice this looks like it is for the exclusive use of right handers. Don't they care about losing ten percent (and probably higher for programmers) of their potential market?

    Lefties and inaccuracies

Don't you know lefties are evil!

Logitech - fighting the war against evil! Also why would a higher proportion of programmers be lefties then the national average? When left handed people tend to have more artistic leanings than nerdish number crunching.

Also the sideways scrolling wasn't introduced with the Revolution - I've been happily scrolling sideways for years on my MX1000 - which is great for long spreadsheets.

BTW - for those lacking a sense of humour module (as there seem to be many who reply to Lesters articles) only the paragraph above this was serious.

    Left handers

Being left-handed myself and having the good fortune to attend their reseller conference a few years ago, I asked their chief of mouse design the same question.

It seems that out of c.7% of the world population that is left handed, repeated research shows that 95% of that 7% use a mouse right-handedly anyway. So making a "proper" left handed mouse would serve just 5% of 7%, which doesn't make good business sense.

And yes, their head of mice was also a left-hander as was his boss!

What good is Logitech RF nano adapter

    ok...

So Logitech is coming out with an nano adapter for ? "laptops".

But they are still selling desktop mice, hello !!

As I have to carry around the mouse anyway, having adapter that plugs into laptop and can stay on is no big deal.

Also this is RF adapter and can't let me connect to multiple devices

    like Bluetooth version.

Summary: Score this as poor knock-off of the right solution... MoGo Dapter

    Bummer..

    should be built in

can manufacturers please create a standard and build them into laptops please? the best feature of my 2 yr old sony laptop is it comes with a built in wireless mouse transciever. and the mouse had a power switch underneath (incredibly useful for saving battery)

my new sony doesnt have this. :(

talking battery life, i had a logitech wireless mouse for a while (till i threw it at the wall) and it used to *eat* batteries, couple of AAs a fortnight. my replacement is a microsoft wireless, one AA lasts at least 4 weeks (and im like 14 hours a day in front of this machine)

    They already did..

It's called Bluetooth! It'll work on any computer, and many PDAs. I have one mouse that I use between multiple computers.

Only problem is if they're all set to automatically use it and you're using them close together, weird stuff can happen. So I have the mouse disabled by default except on the main machine I use it on. Easy enough to turn it on when In need to use it on the others.

    Notebook Mouse?

No such thing. I'll bet a pair of dirty socks this works just as well on a regular PC as it does on a notebook. I don't know about a Mac because it has too many buttons - if it doesn't look like a colouring book or a crayon they generally can't deal with it.

What always puzzled me though is why midget mice get labelled in this fashion. I always thought they were for ne'erdowells (who are characteristically known for having small hands).

As for Logitech not making left handed mice - well that's just good sense. No one would deliberately make something for weirdos. You lot are even worse than the people with small hands.

Still takes up a USB port.

I wonder what the cost of a Bluetooth license must be for Logitech (and others) to continue avoiding it. Instead, enter yet another proprietary RF dongled mouse. It's nice to see that they've made the dongle small enough to remain a permanent attachment, but please, make Bluetooth versions of some of these products!

Signed, a V270 user, glad Logitech makes at least one such device.

You can buy bluetooth mouse, and most laptops are bluetooth-equipped these days. Microsoft makes a good one I think, try its Wireless Laser Mouse 8000. I'm getting one myself, when I finally got laptop with integrated bluetooth :) No need for a different wireless standard.

    Nice Idea

Logitech has proven time and time again that it can produce successful products. This is no exception! Instead of a load of wires every where you got this nano dongle witch takes one USB slot and brands it 'Logitech' whilst doing its job of receiving wireless signals.

    but Bluetooth is built in...

I'd hoped the proprietary RF mouse standards would die after the introduction of Bluetooth, but I guess we're not so lucky. Why have yet another dongle sticking out of the machine, when Bluetooth is usually built in, and if not, it costs less than lunch to add it?

The only possible advantage that a proprietary RF dongle could have is security, because a flaw in a bluetooth stack has more potential to do nasty stuff to the OS. That's not to say that the proprietary USB dongles aren't exploitable, just that they're a low-profile target and enjoy the obscurity that comes with that.
