back to article Life on Mars found – in 1976

The USA’s Viking mission found life on Mars, says a new paper that has re-analysed data collected by the two probes. Complexity Analysis of the Viking Labeled Release Experiments (PDF), published yesterday in the International Journal of Aeronautic and Space Sciences, asserts that a test designed to detect microbial life did …

nobody suggesting "take off and nuke from orbit" yet?

Good job too... it didn't work very well in The Andromeda Strain.

In that case, we'll all be fine and safe from any invading Martian killer microbes if we just drink lots of meths.

Well it's Friday afternoon. There's a pub next door to the office, and a hostel for the homeless 3 doors up from that. I reckon my chances of scoring a post-work pint of meths are pretty good. Cheers!

The first book in this recently Reg-hyped trilogy has lots of life on Mars

What alien life found out, whilst probing about in Command and Control systems on Earth

A little something extra special for the weekend, sir and/or madam?

This paragraph ……. “Unless restrained by this court, Aereo’s unlawful conduct causes plaintiffs to lose control over the dissemination of their copyrighted programming, disrupts their relationships with licensed distributors and viewers and usurps their right to decide how and on what terms to make available and license content over new internet distribution media. That constitutes irreparable harm and Aereo’s service should be enjoined,” …. which Bruce Keller, their lawyer, wrote the federal judge presiding over the litigation, is only the tip of the iceberg for what he really means to say but is probably instructed not to make obvious and reveal, is this version of the statement …… “Unless restrained by this court, Aereo’s unlawful conduct causes plaintiffs to lose control over the dissemination of their subliminal brainwashing programs, disrupts the relationship with government approved quacks and ignorant and susceptible to grooming viewers and usurps their right to decide how and on what terms to make available and license content over new internet distribution media. That constitutes irreparable harm and Aereo’s service should be enjoined,

And yes, present services do constitute and cause irreparable harm, for television is perceived of by the masses as showing reality whenever in actual fact it just displays a staged program to imprint a particular and peculiar view of a foreign digitally mastered world with participating state and non-state actors and extras.

Or are you going to tell us all that it is completely different, and that is not what television is primarily used for …. to brainwash nations and the masses with misleading information in service of a status quo political and politically incorrect social agenda?

Yeah, right on, Big Brother, pull this one, it's got bells on it ….. Ding a ling, a ling a dong!

Nobody stealing anyone's thunder here ......

Oops .... that misleading paragraph is from a right dodgy Wired tale which can be read in full here ...... Shades of 1984 Emerge in Broadcast TV ...

Never mind life on Mars, it still hasn't been established whether there is intelligent life on Earth.

There was life on Mars in 1976.....

But sadly, their immune systems had no defense against the biotoxins common in chicken soup, and we killed off our planetary neighbors before we ever got to know them.

It's the Martian Chronicles all over again!! Curse you, negligent humanity!!

With the right computer model and 'analysis'...

I'm sure they could prove that the descent rockets of our Mars probes are responsible for man-made global warming on Mars.

(I think the the sub-word 'anal' is a clue that most 'analysis' produces crap)

    Alien life

Have you ever thought about us being descendants of aliens that dropped "something" (like a soup can) into the earth when it was still forming? Then some microbes got into the environment, then evolution took place and here we are? Maybe in a billion years some form of intelligent life will be creating a religion that has beliefs like ours, when all it was, was an alien making a quick restroom stop in our planet leaving some souvenirs in the way to other location.

    Not so implausible

    Might be the case,

One way to be sure, if we ever find Martian microbes (Here's hoping) examine them under electron microscope to see if they have left handed or right handed biochemistry.

Interestingly, if the hypothetical Mars life WAS different chirality to Earth microbes then it would behave anomalously when encountering the amino acids from the labelled release experiment.

Its like us trying to digest rocks.

      Re: chirality

      "Interestingly" is an understatement.

Finding life on Mars that isn't terribly dissimilar to life on Earth (extremophiles) wouldn't really be a biggee. We nearly had that with the Mars meteorite a decade or so ago, but it didn't make much of a splash, largely because various people stepped up to explain how plausible it was that life might hitch a lift on a meteorite and travels to a nearby planet.

Finding life with the other chirality would be a massive biggee, since it would imply that life emerged twice. That would be the biggest blow since Darwin for a certain strain of "special status" God botherer.

(I hasten to add that most God botherers don't seem to have a problem with Darwin, or science in general. However, the ones that do are particularly annoying, even (perhaps especially) for the ones that don't. Therefore, all reasonable people should welcome anything that results in them getting a good kicking.)
