back to article DOE recruits cloud, chip, and AI giants for Trump's Genesis Mission

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has a Christmas gift for the AI industry in the shape of agreements for collaboration in the Trump administration's Genesis Mission, which aims to use AI to drive scientific discoveries. On Thursday, the DOE said it had signed agreements with 24 organizations interested in working to advance …

I guess the difference between this and the suspended Moonshot is the tRump can put his name on (and likely personally profit from) this new Initiative.

And what better way to generate large volumes of generally useless "research" than to have Eh? Aye! direct it?

    But not Phil Collins, sadly

I hear that Phil is heartbroken at not being associated with Trump.

Bahhh, considering what become of Genesis when he took over, they're more than welcome to him.

Yeah, I was never a big fan during or after Genesis although like most artists I can find one or two of his songs that I like(?). Can't think of any right off hand so maybe not.

You live in the land of confusion, so it is natural to not remember and throwing it all away. You need to call mama, that's all to prevent to be in too deep.

You found one! And I really like that one too, especially with the video that went with it. See, I knew there was at least one. Thanks.

Actually four... "Land of confusion", "Throwing it all away", "Mama" and "In too deep". I may have been able to insert two or three more, but tonight³ was the limit where I can't dance a joke any more, or you'd be no son of mine to follow you follow me... That's all, I have to stop now or Jesus, he knows me, unless you tell my why! There's been many, too many already...

Yes, the music changed a lot after Peter Gabriel left. That said, on reflection, I think Phil Collins probably got too much criticism for doing what he did well. He simply was never the showman. But he did come up with some great pop tunes, though he should perhaps have worked more with that gorilla!

    Multi-agent virtual scientific collaborator

A "virtual collaborator" - so that is something that, to the outside world, looks just like a collaborator (takes in grant money, demands to have its name on publications) but when you try to look inside it doesn't have any actual substance at all.

OTOH if they let the "agentic tools" have their head, ordering stuff off the interwebs to be installed as dictated by the neatly generated diagrams inspired by scraping the best mathematics images ever published, maybe we will see the DoE complete its transformation of Fermilab. Brought to you by Google DeepMind and displayed on Google Maps, Illinois will finally have a proper Mandelbrot Set.

    Quite late, that man...

Over two decades before the hype AI scientists used it successfully. Trained for specific tasks and used right it works well, saves time, and sometimes improves in unexpected ways. Though in science it is not always called it "AI" since they know more precise what it actually is.

Does Trump think Peter Gabriel is still with Genesis? Would not surprise me...

Unless they gave him money somewhere, I'd speculate he is only dimly aware of either. Likely he doesn't remember them today at least, even if he ever did.

No, I simply ignored that nonsense and never thought about keeping track who spills what nonsense. I prefer to use my memory for better things, like learning the pattern of wood-chip-wallpaper. I only got notice when someone referenced "AMFM1", and I was irritated by the abbreviation with "What radio thingy is that?". If not for that occurrence I would have auto-ignored AMFM1 posting for even more years without ever mapping it to one account.

Want proof? Hoooold it.... Gotcha: What's "AMFM1"? I can only find AM/FM radios and "build your own antenna" manuals. "six month ago" - dammit I HAAAATE that "X month ago" instead of an EXACT date. This is just about as dumb as the Windows file explorer saying "was modified an hour ago", when I need precision to tell which file is newer. HEY THEREGISTER stop doing the same UI stupidness as MS!

Still, this places my "discovery" at around middle of 2025, and even then only indirectly. You did simply not add enough value to TheRegister forum to get noticed earlier by me. And, well, I could have NOT asked back then, would have saved a few brain cells from being on life support.

I suppose it will be trained to tell him what he wants to hear. Scientists are unreliable - they say things he doesn't like.

    I shall remain cautiously optimistic..

..hoping that by 'AI' they do not mean LLM but rather more dedicated machine learning tools.

I cannot see how a glorified Eliza will unearth anything that didn't already exist when it's model was trained. (Hallucinations excluded)
