back to article China hauls in 13 web giants for ‘supervision interviews’

China has again moved to ensure its web giants don’t prove too disruptive to its economy, hauling 13 of them in for “supervision interviews” with a panel of regulators. As announced by the Peoples’ Bank of China (PBOC), it and the nation’s Banking Regulatory Commission, Securities Regulatory Commission, State Administration of …

    Authoritarian = insecure

Xi's insecurity no doubt. Xi's a little man, a CCP member in the right place at the right time. Fears criticism, fears being found out. Fears discovery.

Jack Ma criticized a bad Xi policy, so Alibaba had to be dismantled and Ma disappeared from public view.

Here 13 other companies are getting a warning. Xi's insecurity requires they decapitate any company that gets so big, in case the leaders of those companies can be seen as more successful than Xi. Shouldn't Jack Ma be running China, as successfully as he ran Alibaba? Not this minor civil servant?

It's a pattern repeating over and over again. Not good for China, just Xi keeping Xi in power at the expense of China.

And of course, you could never possibly be allowed to say this if you were in China, and that's a sign of just how weak he is.

Authoritarians like Putin and Xi are really weak men afraid of words.

Crikey, AC. A mad raving rant practically overflowing with poisoned views and all manner of other malicious and fallacious Tom Foolery is no way to start the day trying to influence people.

Take a lie down and a chill pill, for some in extremis of your condition experience the strait jacket alone in the lonely quarantine of a padded cell.

Take a downvote hit and mull over those facts which are not designed to do harm or invoke and provoke dissent.

Do you know A.N.Others more fully realise the wisdom and overwhelming competitive advantage that entrepreneurially wealthy, healthily privately capitalised, sociably communised models for productive and progressive existence grant to enthusiastic supportive players, both optimal prime key leading and minor bit part peripheral following, and would see the CCP regime and XI antics as worthy of copy cat emulation/program pirating for novel alternate base beta testing ....... or are you blinded by the possibility and terrified by the simplicity of the arrangement and adjustments that would make it work extremely well?

You must be new here.. The fact that you made it to the 4th paragraph of a 'amanfrommars1' post at all puts you ahead of most of us.

Either that or it's evolving becoming slightly more coherent.

With regards to Xi pinging them down... Kids in glass houses...

We have to remember that whilst yes, China and Russia are taking extreme measures. The west's lack of action on things like curbing the reach of large corporations has resulted in elections being influenced, leaders being bribed/lobbied, wild, unsubstantiated lunatic fringes blaming secret cabals behind their inability to have reliable Internet instead of just greed and apathy (as Occam's razor would instead suggest).

If only we could find a middle ground between the extremes. Where the worst corporate excesses are correctly dealt with, taxation is fairly taken and leaders competent, accountable and take responsibility of failings.

Yep, China will NEVER become great with micro-management on this scale. Xi is SO weak.

Putin and Xi are really weak men afraid of words? My dear, your naivete is charming. They rule their countries with iron hand, letting their subject oligarchs prosper and grow, but not at the expense of the state. And when their subject oligarchs get too cocky, they are reminded of certain facts of life.

You, of course, would prefer the corporations being given a free rein to run amok with their greed, right?

Yes, they are weak. They are unable to tolerate any comment on their behaviour that they think affects their stature. They cannot learn. They cannot improve. Their people suffer as a consequence. All of their power and decisions focus only on being afraid of what someone might say about them.

So yes, they are the weakest.

      Re: Authoritarian = insecure

Calling Xi weak is a far cry from reality, he at least has the courage to take on the billionaires from becoming so powerful that they have the means to disrupt society. If president Xi is weak, what are Western politicians who wiling crawl in the mud to pickup a handful of dollars mr. Zuckerberg or mr. Schmidt toss at them, to fence off taxation and privacy laws being upheld, while they laugh their *ss off watching the scene ?. The few who want to change this status quo are painted as "socialist" or worse.

What is the difference between a society ruled by the polit bureau of the CCP or a few dozen billionaires whose mega companies know all about us, influence elections, determine which news we get to see and bought up the elites.

When looking close, the West does better giving people the perception they are "free", but we are not more "free" than people living under CCP rule when it comes to it.

Using the CCP militia to exterminate opposition who you think poses a threat isn't strength. Building a fortress and destroying everything you fear isn't strength. These are the actions of a scared child, though they have grown up results.

There has to be a better way.

Allowing the CCP to oppress the nation, including its commercial enterprises, seems pretty much as bad as allowing the commercial enterprises to become the de facto authorities.

    Sigh.

Anyway, did they all leave the meeting with their fingernails still intact?
