The Pentagon has finally opened the bidding for its major cloud contract, which could be worth some $10bn – and is to be awarded to one vendor. Winning the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) programme – which will cover all branches of the military and run for a maximum of 10 years – will be a major coup for any …

    Bid, What??

    >>bid for a one-hour in-person Q&A with a Pentagon exec<<

Bidding to talk to the customer pre proposal, that's a new one!

This is before they get to provide a cloud for top secret level information at the lowest bid. Please tell me that this cloud isn't connected to the Internet.

      Most importantly

As long as the bid includes meeting the single most important set of specifications in the entire US Government [caution pdf], what can possibly go wrong?

    S3 Bucket

Wonder what the odds are that the Pentagon will leave a S3 Bucket wide open for all to see...

    Security?

Wouldn't it be far more sensible to keep servers containing military information inside a military facility with strictly controlled access? I should think the average grunt employee of a commercial outfit might be tempted to clone a HDD or 10 if offered a large sum by someone in Iran, China or Russia.

Security? Control?? A JEDI craves not these things.

      Re: Security?

      Not necessarily.

AWS set up a dedicated GovCloud region, and the DoD could insist contractually on all employees with access being the US equivalent of SC cleared.

"might be tempted to clone a HDD"

      Which presumably would be encrypted.

Under Trump, Fascist as President or FaP, you have to wonder if the plan isn't to give his buddy Vlad access...for cooperation.

    Didn't DARPA already do this?

I'm sure I remember them developing some sort of interconnected system of computers designed to withstand a nuclear war or something.

    Let's see...

Pentagon contract, check, lots of terms and conditions that can be endlessly quibbled, check, length of contract most likely negotiable, check, additional unforeseen expenses, check.

Final bill for taxpayers: $100 billion to $1 trillion over two decades or more. By that time, the original purpose and goals will be completely forgotten and one of the alphabet soup agencies will have hundreds of permanent staff to manage the contractors.

Let's see...? Have old lesson been well learned? Or will it be just war business as usual?*

the original purpose and goals will be completely forgotten .... wsm

The provision of universal peace supplied by an almighty force and source of stellar domination with fiat dollar hegemony is next to impossible to forget if too many, and that may be as few as any, are to experience and suffer subjugation and deadly conflict in both public and personal and private and pirate space invasions rather than enjoying peace and prosperity with SMARTR IT Supply and Media Presentation of Future Grand Visions, ....... so that is one purpose and goal to be avoided embarking on at any and all costs.

      * And that depends entirely upon the state and levels of intelligence in global leaders and the renegade rogue actors excluded from the pack.

And one has to realise there will always be friendly competition from both state and non-state actors which can, and therefore will, all too easily morph into hostile opposition, for the field is not uncrowded whenever the rewards for success are so monumental and attractive to an elitist few. 'Tis an Achilles Heel of Humankind.

Here be a UKGBNI Based JEDI competitor ........ https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/mod-annual-report-project-global-influence/

Russia and China are going to love that the US military are creating a single point of failure for them self.

    My bad...

When the title mentioned JEDI bids, I was thinking Star Wars satellite laser defense system which would have been cool. Unfortunately the article was about the military going cloudy...

Why not just have the NSA develop the entire thing, they would have a good time as well, while doing it for one tenth the price.
